Painted the Sport grill grid section in satin black in order to tone down the chrome a bit

2016 Tacoma TRD Offroad MT with BFG KO2's, SR Grille and Katskinz Leather seats. I also ordered a TRD Sport hood but they didnt send some minor part so it couldnt get installed after it got painted. Next up is the new ARB Bullbar and catback exhaust. Also if anybody in the Northwest wants to buy a TRD offroad grille PM me.

What kind of paint did you use, and how was the prep?

I opted not to remove the grill for painting. Plastic grill tabs break off easily.

    A couple of sequence tips:

    1. Mask off the grill bar area you do not want to paint with 1" blue tape. This masking is to prevent you from accidentally scuffing the grill bars or emblem area during sanding
    2. Sand lightly with 400 sandpaper. You just want to knock the shine down a bit on the chrome surface. Be sure to sand inside each grill square for about 5 seconds. This is all about scouring the surface instead of sanding it smooth.
    3. Remove the masking tape
    4. Use a micro fiber cloth to wipe down the entire grill with 3m adhesive/wax remover or something similar to remove the dirt. This chemical evaporates quickly. Be sure to get inside each grill square
    5. Place wide 3-4 inch wide blue tape on the inside of the grill to prevent overspray within the engine compartment.
    6. Use 1" blue tape to mask the center bar and the chrome trim. Taking your time is the key for straight lines.
    7. Keep the hood open and mask the bumper, headlights and top of the fenders with newspaper
    8. Spray Duplicolor adhesion promoter primer. Spray a coat, wait 10 min., spray another coat, wait 10 min. spray 3 coats of satin or flat black Krylon Fusion with 10 minutes between paint coats.
    9. Pull off tape after 30 minutes

Once i had all supplies in hand, it took approximately 90 minutes to prep the grill for paint

My SR doesn't have the convenience package, no cruise , no keyless entry , no intermittent wipers, Does have tilt /telescoping wheel . Unless your 18 and think the rest of the Wal*Mart parking lot what's to hear your bass bumpin' , the stereo is more than adequate.
