Hello...My 2005 Tacoma with 225,000 mikes just failed my dealer's rust inspection, as per my Toyota letter..... I want to trade it in ( for another Tacoma ) BEFORE the repair........I assume SOMEBODY in this forum has been faced with the same situation.......Has anybody been faced with the same situation?......What kind of trade-in have other Tacoma owners received, assuming the dealer would fix it and then sell ( or wholesale ) it?...........Are they in any mood to deal in this matter?.....Let me know.........[IMG][IMG][IMG]

I'd do the frame first, you don't really have any bargaining chips trying to trade in a truck that needs to be dismantled. They'll either do the work and sell it afterwards, or they'll auction it off as is. More than likely with 225k miles, they'll not want it either way. Or not for the price you want, anyway.

Back in the day dealers would either repair it or offer something like 150% of kbb.

Toyota was funding that though, not dealerships - and wasn't that due to the lawsuit? I wouldn't imagine that still is an option. :notsure:

I would get the frame fixed, then keep the truck until its dead and buried, assuming that it's mechanically fine.

new frame should be free to replace and should only help you get more out of it when you sale it.

    Have frame replaced.

    Sell truck yourself.

    Buy replacement vehicle.

Trade in's favor the dealer, not the customer.

I would let them replace the frame, then I would sell it. the resale on these trucks is crazy high. no way I would ever trade anything in on a new vehicle. on paper they try to make you think you got a lot for your trade in, but in reality you don't. you can negotiate with cash better than an old vehicle. I think most people don't like the hassle or the time it takes to sell, so they just trade it in.

Get the frame replaced and see how you feel about it...a new frame is a great thing to have. If you still want to sell it after that, you'll get a lot more money for it because it'll be in much better condition.

Father in law just went through this. Dealers price was the same before or after frame swap.
They should put you in a loaner to abuse and trade in won’t change. Then you have a new frame that will be a huge point for private sale.

I vote new frame an keep for a while an see if you still enjoy. If it’s paid off I’d put the payment of a new truck into new parts for your old one an it gets a new lease on life.

How many miles on his truck? Just curious.

I think the main hindrance with OP is the 225k miles, not so much the frame.

    Missed the miles part here.
His had like 90k I believe.
But it was also beat he didn’t do a thing to it. Had moss growing on the back window even. The box was beat just abused. Kinda pisss me off I maintain my truck and won’t get anything from Toyota but he gets a frame due to lack of maintenance. I think he had to put in 500$ but ended up keeping the truck.
    His is a 05 also.

Toyota is willing to put a $12,000 new frame plus many replacement parts on your 12 or 13 year old truck that probably is worth less than that to begin with. You aren't really losing anything by letting them do the work, and trading it later if you aren't satisfied how it turns out.
