I'm in O&G and it is unsettling how slow things have been to turn around. Thankfully I got onto a project that won't finish for the next 3 years.

Been O&G for 20+ years, every few/couple of years there is a round, whether it's actually needed or not, but someone higher up decided it was. Keep your skills up and hope you don't have to play career roulette.

 

so way much troof, is too much troof? man i havent even gotten through my first cup of coffee today i was so messed up thinking its going to be me.

 

unfortunately not as lucky as you at this point... there isnt enough work to go around really, but the company is still trying to keep people. this is the biggest layoff today besides the one 2 years ago

yeah, i found everyoen wants to put their name on somethign so they are going to try to shake things up

 

I was agreeing with you that the last few rounds I have seen are not necessarily cutting fat, but getting through to the muscle.

 

My theory as well, what I say is that every layoff/re-org is called on by a C* that needs to make a mark, then they are usually gone 2-3 years down the road when their cost predictions are actually evaluated and assessed, so no accountability, then another C* comes around and the cycle starts over.

 

yeah they say oil is cyclical but the D bags leading it are too. anyone know of anywhere hiring (non O&G) or really just smaller O&G (or services) company?

idk i basically work as a field engineer right now. plan projects, execute projects, do project recording, repeat. engineering technology by degree (passed the FE in the other discipline, so i am an EIT in TX, though not sure that matters)

 

Dang. All the engineers and planners in here make me feel like a blue collar redneck sometimes lol. I guess it's true that people with toyotas usually have good jobs.

 

I wanna get into the Kolache business and make my own damn rules!

 

My company only has software engineering positions open right now. We focus on process facilities for O&G, Chemical, and Pharma. So we don't get hit as bad as a lot of the drilling, energy, and exploration companies during the downturn. We did reduce our workforce by about 20% last year.

Oil and gas is constantly firing and hiring. It's a volatile industry, pun intended.
