My first go at chickens, had ducks for quite a few years, but got sick of the maintenance with a pool and all. Setting these ladies up with low maintenance auto waterers a grandpa’s automatic feeder.
    Got 7 in total.

So we got nine, 2 day old chicks last week. Had a segregated area with a heat lamp set up for them. All were healthy and active. 2nd day found one dead with her chest ripped open. 4th day wife checked them in the morning. All good, a few hours later. All gone! Not a feather to be found! DAMNIT! Adult birds not bothered at all. If you think your birds are safe, check again you might have missed something.

Had a very sad evening last night. Yesterday afternoon a hawk got one of our sweetest girls. I knew it was a higher risk with her being a smaller bantam.
    She will be missed.

    :(
Sorry to hear. I had a red tail get my bantam, Brownie, a couple of years back while I was in the damned yard. Couldn't get to her fast enough to stop it and even me throwing a 5 gallon bucket towards it wasn't enough to spook it to let go. Off she went..:annoyed:

As strange as it sounds, I’m glad she went to contribute to the food chain as opposed to having an animal kill her for sport. I’ve had a few flocks of ducks in the past (Peking and Indian runners) and had numerous of them killed by negligent owned hunting dogs.
My wife keeps saying she wishes she had been out there to stop it, but like you said @FlyingWolfe, even if she was there, it probably wouldn’t have stopped it.

Poor Nugget has been sick all weekend with sour crop.
I drained her crop on Saturday morning (and in turn sympathy puked from the smell while she was puking) and gave her water with a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar, which she ended up drinking a ton of. Then spoon-fed her some watered down greek yogurt and a little olive oil to try to get some calories into her. Shes alert and can stand but she's weak and not as perky as usual. She hasn't eaten for two days now but keeps trying to. Off on a big adventure to the avian vet today to hopefully be able to get her fixed up with some antibiotics and nutrients.
With the covid crap though I have to wait outside. I'm kind of miffed that I can't go in with her to offer some kind of comfort/familiarity rather than handing her off to a bunch of people she doesn't know. :( I hope she gets better, she's my husband's and my favorite girl (comes in the house for treats, knocks on the door, follows us everywhere, perches on our shoulders)

So sorry to hear this, I hope the trip to the avian vet went well.
I haven’t heard of this yet, so I’m thankful that you posted about it so I can add it to a watchful list of chicken health. I can only imaging the stench, and have to admit I lol’ed a little about your sympathy puke. (Sorry!)

On a side note, my surviving bantam turned out to be a rooster. Which my wife and I find highly comical since he’s the smallest and has a Napoleon complex. But he’s actually really one of the sweetest chickens and loves to be held.
Starting to get to the age where I’m expecting to see some eggs from the ladies.

Brought her in to get checked out. She was not pleased with the car ride.
    EFB95C0C-F5CB-4557-8D38-CD80BC0DF48B.jpg

While waiting in the parking lot after handing her off (corona bs, couldnt go in with her) I get a call that "her crop cultures came out okay, so no sour crop, and that she has some nodules in her stomach" without any further options and get told euthanizing her is all they can do.
No further diagnosis options, no bloodwork, xrays, poo tests.. Gastro blockage (she gets into stuff sometimes), worms, egg-bound, something treatable? Nothing. Birds don't typically do well with surgery but knowing what the issue is would've been nice so I could be given some direction to treat her if possible, but after being told basically my only option was to kill her I just wanted her out of there asap. I panicked and told them absolutely not I then get asked "what do you want to do". I'd like my pet back, alive, so I can leave. Ended up literally running to the building to get her the hell out of there. They're my girls, but I guess it's "just a chicken" so- lesson learned.
Shes alert, drinking, and eating small amounts but is lethargic. Crop is full in the morning which isnt good so shes been getting daily crop and bum massages to try to empty her crop out and try to loosen whatever is going on if possible. Shes feisty and isnt very tolerant of it but as long as shes still walking around and eating and drinking i’ll keep working on her.. i brought her to work with me yesterday after the vet bs because i wanted to get food and water back into her asap (they emptied her crop..)

Part of our Halloween decor was the addition of the sign. It works well!
