Guys looks like I got hosed. purchased a used softopper for a 2nd gen short bed, but after installation it's clear that it doesn't fit. Really bummed.

does anyone know a model number on these to find out the appropriate application?

My best guess would be to measure how much it hangs off the end but it doesn’t look like it for a long bed, but maybe for a 3rd gen if the bed is longer, I noticed from the websites I’ve looked at the all fit from 2005-2019 years

Working with Softopper to identify the appropriate application. Here's what shes looking for to identify.

Can you take a few measurements from the fabric canopy?..
    - The distance from the first snap to the last snap on one of the side panels.
    - The distance between the snaps ... 1st to 2nd to 3rd, etc
    - The Roof length. Without the sides snapped, let the frame relax. Measure the length of the roof from the outside the front crossbar to the outside of the rear crossbar.

Let me know what they say please, cause I’m currently shopping for a used one and not to be rude, but don’t want to get sold one that won’t fit mine, but again from what I have read with short beds all years after 2005 should fit but I could always be wrong it’s the internet after all

I believe the 3rd gen toppers are a bit different in size. a 2nd gen topper will fit a 3rd gen truck but i dont believe a 3rd gen topper will fit a 2nd gen truck. I'll let you guys know what softopper says. But it looks like i'll be selling this one for sure.

The rail itself wouldn't fit the bedside if it were for a long bed.

It doesn't even look like the fabric snaps are spaced right for the frame it is sitting on.

Yeah that's exactly what i'm saying. Also the frame has 1 additional snap (2nd one in from the tailgate) which the canvas does not have... I'm thinking I really got hosed...

Here's two pictures the kid just sent me. Hes saying that he's installed the same ST on (2) other 2nd gen DC SB trucks. The white one is his, the MCM is his buddies.

That white one is a DCLB for sure.

Look at the distance between the cab and the rear tires.

yeah the white one is a long bed the MCM is a short bed. Both the pictures the topper is tight though. it almost looks like the frame is built for a long bed (as it was probably purchased for his white LB) but the actual canvas looks like its built for a completely different truck. Too loose between snaps and even looks pretty loose around the braces when its up.

Those rails look nothing like my ST rails. Did they change from channels to tube square in recent years?

Here are the measurements. To me it’s obvious that the bed rails are for a different application then the frame & canvas. Which is probably the worse case scenereo...

I’ll let you guys know what softopper says.

    Canvas
First snap to last nap - 61 1/2”
    Between each snap - 10 1/4”
    Cross bar - cross bar - 63”
    7 snaps

    Frame
First snap to last snap - 58 1/4”
    Between each snap - 9 1/2”
Front of to back of rail - 60 1/2”
    8 snaps

Here’s what Softopper has to say.

“I believe you have the bedrails for the 5' bed Tacoma and the frame and an older canopy for a Tundra CrewMax.
We had these same questions and similar photos from someone last week who couldn't provide any information on the top or where it was purchased.”

So advice for anyone purchasing a used Softopper. Make sure you see plenty of pictures of it installed, or see it installed on a vehicle yourself before purchasing. Instillation literally takes 10 minutes and a 9/16 socket, so it’s better to instal the top before finalizing the purchase.

If not, make sure the distance between the snaps on the canvas as the same distance between the snaps on the bed rail. There should be the same number of snaps on the bed frame as there are on the canopy.

So the final determination was that it was for a different bed?

That thought went thru my head when I saw those pics. "Could this be a canopy for a CM"?

The first time i stepped back and looked at it, I was like... This must be for a Tundra. Really bummed. Anyone happen to have an extra 2nd gen short bed Tacoma canopy/frame they want to get rid of?
