    list is growing fast
    Try the bottom hole.

Serious tho, it seems to be different rail positions fore and aft, strap tension, the way the canopy is raised, the order it’s snapped, ambient, temperature, etc etc can affect the finish fit. I think some just get lucky and it works, others need to tweak it. Try starting the install over, including the rail position. See if that helps.

sorry I was no help.

Damn! Not quite sure what to do then. I swear, my OCD goes haywire sometimes when I keep looking at my softopper. Still love the softopper, but god damn there isnt a "perfect" position for it.

So it's not the greatest picture, but I actually really like the bestop.. maybe it's because I haven't had a softopper yet, but I was able to pick this one up for a pretty good price. Also showing off my newly finished camping platform/setup! I just added a lockable access door to the under-bed storage, so I'll need to stain/finish that to match or to carpet the whole thing..

I've been looking for something like this with a quick detach option. Wish it wasn't such a hefty price tag. Nice rack!

Got a bestop this week. Tried installing this evening but the clamps seem to have a different angle. The bolt to pull the together won’t line up. I’m worried about killing the aluminum threads. Anybody here had issues with the clamps on theirs? Thanks

Did you get the original bestop (with windows) or the new one? I think both models have different clamps. It may help to post a picture of your clamps and how misaligned the bolt/rail mount are. Mine required a bit of finagling but I don't recall it being too bad.

It’s the new one without windows. Gonna work with it again this morning. I did get the passenger side front figured out but the driver side front just keeps fighting me.

Is the rear bar supposed to be curved for 3rd gen tacomas? I bought one used and I'm not sure if mine is...

All bars are different. Some are straight. Some curve to the left. Some curve to the right. Regardless of which way your bar points, just know that all bars are different and its nothing to be ashamed of.

It's my understanding that the short beds have a curved bar and the long beds have a straight bar. I had picked up a softopper secondhand for a 3rd gen long bed and it came with a straight bar. I confirmed this with a rep at Softopper.

Ok got it. I wonder if you could use a curved bar with a short bed to keep out rain better?

A short bed should have a curved bar as I mentioned, the long beds don't for whatever reason. I assume the curved bars are more fitting for the 3rd gen tailgates.

idk why it’d be more fitting... the bar doesn’t effect the external shape. it sits an inch or two inside the tailgate edge, and just keeps the rear panel “latched” closed.

the rear window panel is tensioned from the upper frame to the overhang on the curved tailgate edge, which creates the profile or external shape.

It'd be more fitting because the curved bar is more aesthetically similar to the curve of the 3rd gen tailgate, whereas the straight bar is not. Not to mention, it helps with the way the back panel lays over the tailgate. Because the bar sits just inside the tailgate edge, the straight bar causes the overhang to look tighter toward the middle because of the bow, whereas it's looser toward the edges.

hmmmm... yeah man, read my last post... mine seals to the tailgate (which is curved) and the whole rear panel is taught from top to bottom.

on the inside, the loop holding the crossbar has slack; it can be lifted or adjusted slightly without affecting the external panel.

if your rear window is tensioned to the crossbar and not the tailgate (or if it’s saggy), i think it’s set up incorrectly.

    Hey everyone,

Sold my 2nd gen and picking up a 3rd gen next week. With that being said right before I sold my 2nd gen I had debris fall on the Softopper and creating a tear in the top of the topper.

Softopper customer service says it’s 100% fixable and they would patch it for $100 Repaired and shipped both ways. If anyone is interested in buying the Softopper and repairing it PM your best offer. I am located in NJ and the rear window is a mesh window. Aside from the tear it’s in good shape with brand new buckle replacements.
