So far I've added an Advance folding bed cover and since removed it. Gave it to my son in Maine, he has an 05 2wd. GT perfect fit seat covers. Weathertech floor mats and window vent visors. Waag center brush/grill guard. Hose clamp tailgate mod. Turned off the seat belt chime. Added Ultra-Gauge. Trailer hitch. Softopper. Replaced sun visors with slide out style. Toyota bed extender. Had Firestone Destinations and now Michelin LTX AT2 in stock size. More mods to come; Fog lights, locking storage in bed, intermittent wipers. Now looking for Radio/HU upgrade. and maybe a lift way down the road.
Anybody have paint damage like this.

I have this in a few spots along the edge of the plastic on both sides. Top has been on since September.
I didn't notice this til recently and not sure it's the softopper causing it.

I can't see how the topper could cause that. But I'm only seeing one picture (one up close and one out farther of the same area?). It looks as if the top bed rail was either compressed and somehow rubbed that spot. But to me it looks like to you took a buffer to hard to the corner and burned the paint off. Have you used some sort of buffer lately? The corner like that can be easy to overdue as it's a peak. It's a real head scratcher though.

Post up what you find out as I'm curious to hear. What does it feel like? Is it wax residue left behind that you can just rub off?

3" lift EIBACH coils w/ 5100's front, OME/ Dakar leaf springs w/ toytec adjustable shackles at 1.5" and 5125's out back. 33x10.5x15 KM2's Relentless DIY steel bumper.
It's not from the softopper. It's from the plastic bed insert. I have an 01 and the plastic insert has scratched off most of the paint underneath it. If I ever do remove the plastic insert then I'll have bed rails that are scratched to SHI+.

Oh, and it was like this wayyyyyy before the softopper. So I doubt the weight of the softopper would cause the plastic insert to scratch the paint any more than it already does.

That tan topper looks really good with the black bars. Making me consider painting the bars on mine..

true... but if that was the case, since the pic is taken with the softtopper on, I'd think that it'd be much closer to the bed.. that's A LOT of movement in that one area, doesn't look like it's the length of the bed, it is near a clamp though so you may be right...

edit: Does look like he has similar marks near the front and rear clamps... so you may be on to something... but I still say DAMN that's a lot of movement, and I'd think that's something Toyota may warranty given it's movement between the bed top and the fender and that's NOT supposed to happen... but I doubt it

After reading and looking more closely to the pics I think you're right. And now I'm thinking about ditching the Softopper until I can come up w/ a solution. Not really feeling the 'fill it full of caulk' method. Or is that cock?

I wonder if just backing off the clamps a bit would be enough. It looks like the rub spots are right where the clamps are.

The rub I took a close up of is a few inches in front of the rear clamp. There is a rub mark just forward of the forward clamp too same side. Passenger. Drivers side not as bad but same places. I tried rocking the cover pretty hard and couldn't get the plastic to meet the paint. I could if I really put pressure right on the plastic at that spot. I didn't check that other thread yet but was wondering if many other with these covers are seeing similar damage. Don't know what beside the softopper would be doing it. ??

I just went out and inspected mine. It's only been on there two weeks. No rub marks. But I did the same as you. Rocked the top and felt the seam. Where the cap is closest to the paint is not where the clamps are. The cap is generally 1/16 to 1/32 off the truck. It touches near the front edge and rear edge. You can easily flex it out.

Ok. I'm not certain it's the cover but don't have any other idea. I'll be looking at other tacos in parking lots now. Please don't shoot me.

Delivered today :) checked out the instructions online and either this thing is easy to install, but bad explanation, or it is going to be tedious and annoying... Either way, excited to have access to my bed and weather resistance as needed without having to pull off a 150lb shell!

They're a pain in the ass to install if it's cold out. A nice heated garage will do wonders!
