I guess how high the highest point sits above the cab. Actual mounting surface width on the inside where it sits on the bed.
I know the rear flap piece is curved for the tailgate but I can make my own out of aluminum if need be.

They seems stupid similar just wouldn’t want it much taller than my roof for wind reasons.
    Thanks!!!!

Huh. I've always removed it. I think I read somewhere it's best to, but it probably really doesn't matter. I don't get to interstate/highway speeds in Safari mode, so it probably doesn't matter. If I'm going on the Interstate, I always button it down fully. I've also read that others leave it open, but to me you're just asking for strain on the points in the long run.

The rear aluminum tube on the 3rd Gen version Longbed is a straight tube (not curved).

I believe it depends on the bed length. I remember reading that somewhere in here. I think SB is curved and LB is straight.

hmm, doesn’t make a lot of sense. The tailgates aren’t any different based on the bed length.

Not sure what to tell you. Just what I've seen in this thread. I agree that it's weird.

I have the 2016+ Longbed version and it is a straight tube! I even verified on my receipt and they shipped a 2016+ LB Softopper.

Would you be able to show me a picture of the rear tube assembly? I'm curious if it's the same as second gen.

2016+ Longbed is Straight. So we are both right.

ST changed their design some time in mid 2017. Some out there have curved, some have a straight bar. Mine is off a 2016 short bed and had a curved bar but I replaced it with a straight bar and it fits my 2nd gen just fine. ST did a few design revisions so I’m sure they aren’t even as clear on the differences so it makes no sense to try and tell them apart. Their own customer service swears that a 2nd gen and 3rd gen topper are the same height even though multiple people including myself have confirmed otherwise. They also changed the way the rear bar secured to the side assembly during that time.

Anybody have the screen insert for the rear window? I'm trying to figure out if it's only screen or if there is another panel behind the screen with a zipper or anything like a tent flap.

It is just a screen in place of where the window is, no zipper flap.

Agreed. I bought a 3rd gen LB topper in 2016. It has the curved bar & was shorter than my 2nd gen topper. Maybe ST was trying to standardize the tops for simplicity.

Yup. I think once they started figuring out that a lot of their toppers were extremely similar in size, they just averaged out the measurements and cut down on model numbers to streamline their manufacturing. Smart move on their part but leaves a lot of confused customers not knowing what topper fits what vehicle.

If anyone here buys used, you’d best make sure to test fit it before you drive off. Not because people are shady but if you don’t know what you’re looking at, then you might not be getting exactly what you think you are.

People are sketchy. I bought a used Tacoma shorted topper off this 18 year old punk. and didn't test fit it before I handed over the money as we met up at like 10pm. When I went to install it I quickly learned he sold me tacoma 5' bedrails but the topper & frame were for full sized trucks. Really pissed me off. luckily about 5 months later I found a used 3rd gen, and you best believe I had that thing fully installed before handing over any cash.
