After 6 years with this softopper, I'm still in love with it. The versatility is unmatched and I'm glad I didn't add bed bars. So nice to be able to fold it forward, load up the truck with gear and bikes while standing up, put the topper back, and keep it in Safari mode while traveling with the dog in her crate so she gets plenty of air flow and some shade. It's also the dog's hangout spot at the campsite when she needs a break from everything and a nice nap. Not too worried about heat under there when it's in Safari mode, unlike a regular bed cap. Also the open sides kind of feel like having windoors. I position my drink cooler so I can grab a drink or add more ice from the side of the truck.

If anyone is interested that's a Ruff Land large size dog kennel back there. Along with two medium sized coolers, ended up with three bikes on the way home, fishing gear, a few chairs and other miscellaneous items

We just got back from our trip up to Silverwood Lake. This is the easiest way to take a family of four plus a big dog. Think i finally have my setup dialed in!

Also ... When it's just two of us on a camping or overlanding trip my setup is a lot more simple. There's no dog, we sleep in the bed of the truck on an exped, camp fridge goes in the cab, etc. Much less work and softopper still performs great.

How bad is theft of these? With no way of locking them down (or locking people out) it's a minor concern. In addition to thieves, we've also got a moderate homeless population here (large city, VA is right down the street and I don't have garage access). Anyone ever find an unwanted person escaping from the elements?

I've never heard of a softopper being stolen. I assume most thieves wouldn't know how to properly remove it and trying to hawk it would be too much work.
I have heard of softoppers being slashed open to see inside which is why I like to remove the rear window when parked on the street and of course never leave anything back there.
As for finding an unwanted camper, it hasn't happened before but I wouldn't be surprised. Nothing a pressure wash and some soap to the bed can't fix.

Thanks! After seeing a thread where one of the stainless caps started rusting before the two year mark, I've become increasingly interested in softtoppers. Been a year since I wanted the metal one. We'll see how a few more people do, but I am liking the idea of being able to use the truck as a truck and not having to pull the thing off every time... so +1 for softtoppers.

What's the point of the bars? Just to get a little more coverage from rain? I just use a short bungie to the buckle loop to hold it open.

    The material is water proof.
But the way it mounts. The bed has corners and stuff for water to get in if sprayed. Or sideways rain. it’s not like a rubber maid container water proof.

I figured I would share this here with you guys since it worked out well for me. I decided to try getting one of the attics from Amazon to install in the soft topper. The one I got had slots that fishing poles could be mounted into as well. Mounted it to the rails and it’s nice and tight and works perfectly.

Any problems when you fold down your softopper or do you just disconnect it?

I haven’t folded it down yet but if I were to I would just unbuckle the system first it only takes seconds to take on and off.

Could someone give me a measurement of how far this part of the softopper drops below the tie down rail? Circled in red.
    Thanks!
