The wife and I used the Softopper on a coast to coast month long camping excursion last year at this time. There were some time constraints (Ski area closing, trips to Mexico, 94th birthdays and a baby that came early)

But, we two stayed at state parks every night , out and back VT , CA, AZ, and back.

Mostly we ground tented, but there were some windy nights where the Softopper made so much sense.
Clear out the coolers and gear, let the therma-rest mats self inflate, roll out the bags and snug in.
I had put up a simple two board shelf at the cab end of the box that holds a lot of stuff that didn't need to be outdoors. Feet fit under with room to spare (heads out to the open tailgate, unless the weather requires it up. "Bug netting" draped over the back is useful in summer.

So all I'm saying is "Ya! Camping in and out of a Softopper is easy", be resourceful/ Keep it simple.

    Have fun!

Any update on this? I just found that my topper has some seams starting to show some wear and are beginning to allow water through. With the Sun out I can see a little bit of light shining through portions of the seam, so I can easily track down where the water is coming through. I might try a reapplication of seam sealer first, but was curious if you’ve had any luck.

Big needle, industrial/uv resistant thread. Just follow the old stitching and do it by hand.

making a privacy curtain to run the back mesh window

copying a pic I saw where guy tied paracord to inside frame
    to hold curtain

plan is cut a black pillowcase hope it doesn’t fray and unravel
Maybe this from Harbor Freight to put eyelids for the paracord

    anyone done this?

    IMG_6182.jpg

best deal I’ve found on tool and eyelets
Assuming they’re big enough for small paracord line

How’s everyone making rain shields for camping with mesh window?

    IMG_6457.jpg

I have a rack like this one so there’s more mounting points (same rack but not my truck in pic and no RTT)

I think a metal shield might work but be cumbersome and expensive

may try something I saw on here
    -PVC pipes
    -tarp
    -bungee cords

I watch this thread but must have missed that convo and can't find any pics now either. Interesting setup with the magnets, tough to see how the shade actually attaches but I can use my imagination.

Added a premium twill softopper, along with some other things to give the taco new life. So far pretty impressed with the product. Not sure it's worth what the price is today, but that may change once I start utilizing it. How's everyone liking the mesh window? Considering it at some point.

Mesh window is a necessity if you sleep in the truck. Also better for visibility. Can you tell us a bit more about the twill? You are the only person I've seen with it. Maybe a close up picture of it?

Awesome thanks for the reply. Hoping they have a memorial day discount for the mesh. I followed this thread where @fiftysix posted some photos and he was nice enough to give me his opinion when I reached out. Here are some photos I took. Haven't had it long, but right off that flap everyone talks about doesn't seem to be a big deal, it feels thick enough to where it wouldn't flap around without velcro or mags, but I did move it more to the cab then recommend. Let me know if you want a certain angle.

Also my My neighbor does a garden party and the first week I put it together another Tacoma, surprisingly the exact same as mine, parked in front of my house with a softopper, which looked like the standard and probably a little bit older. I didn't get an up close photo, but the premium looked considerably darker, but not as tight. Again could be due to age.
