What is this rack? I have been thinking about getting a rack that would fit over my Softopper but not many have caught my eye.... Until this one.

I see that it has side hatches. The sides of the Softopper can be up or down depending on how you want to access. I like it. It looks really good.

    it’s a dissent

honestly look around and compare. KBvoodoo also has one.

I wish there was a rear door for additional mounting and security. And side molle mounting. Maybe I can make it.

I don’t want to drill holes for gear since I always end up re arrange improving.

got it used. Don’t know if they make them any more. Supposedly it’s the same one for 2nd and 3rd gen. Versus their 1st gen one is said to be different.

I like it. Adds mounting and security to the Softopper to an extent. And being aluminum it’s light. Steel may not have a place if it’s not hitting things.

That reminds me I saw one guy welded his own bed rack with a tire holder high up at the rear. So kind of like a swingout but without ruining departure angle. Aluminum may not be strong enough for that.

maybe even the inside of the doors could hold stuff depending on size.

unfortunately, besides the doors being pre drilled for Maxtrax which is great
They’re also pre drilled for rotopax which I think is stupid.

Jerry can? Great. Useful volume. Rotopax? Appears to be over priced, non vented, and only holds about a gallon or so. Maybe enough to water a plant. And make sure it dies because the waters hot.

It's about 40" across at the top, and about 38" off the bed with my oem mat on the floor. Not too bad in my opinion.

New Alu bed rails to mount the Softopper snap rails and accommodate the Thule bases. The old steel pieces were heavy!

Just need to thickness (3"X 16" X 1") some filler blocks for under the rack bases.

The bed rails are drilled and tapped to allow positioning of the rack along the length of the bed.
The ski Top Box will require closer spacing than full bed length.

The Thule uprights were shortened 4-5/8" .right height.jpg re-tapping the cut uprights.jpg

It was so warm today, I could have used sweat for tapping fluid! ;-)

Any concerns with the bed bars tilting inwards? Possibly tightened down too much or how the clamp works?

Works really good for me so far. Installed for about a week with no issues. Thought maybe the angle in would cause more stress on other parts like the rivet the whole thing pivots on

The bars shouldn’t be tilted in like that. The most likely cause is the clamps not sitting properly within the track of the bed rail.

I've not heard of any "bad" things happening due to the rail angle, but it would drive me gonzo.

That is why I put structural angle members on the bed rails as mounting for the ST snap rails. (see post above yours or others) Plus, I get an additional two inches of head room inside that is well appreciated when camping. in situ.

But does it not just fog the brain to consider that ALL the forces , compression, gravity, dynamic, and even snow loads are taken by that tiny little pin that the frame pivots on.

I considered keeping that pin "square" to the world could only be a good thing.

OH! There are MANY MANY MANY threads on the "angled rail" issue. Do read up.

You might snap a pic of your bed rail clamps and show them to wiki168.

I like your style! Two welding shields, a tractor jack, and a can of Modelo.

    Life at it's best!

Actually my rails are also tilted, i adjusted them this past weekend and now they are tilted again. I will fix it this weekend either by adding shims to the clamps or the way that you did it.
On another note the bed now looks like this

that’s what I was thinking and reached out to Softopper and they told me the clamp needs to be flush with the side of the truck but the track within the Tacoma bed has a lip on it and it doesn’t allow the clamp to sit flush with the truck bed to apply more downward force

If I recall correctly, I had to give it a couple tries and tried sliding the clamp forwards and backwards before getting it all dialed in. At the end of the day I don’t believe it’ll ruin the topper, and you will likely be the only one that knows.
