Anyone have a toolbox that they're using with the Softopper? I'd like some extra storage but not sure if they'd be compatible..

    Hey soft toppers,

I roadtrip a lot, and am making the call on a BakFlip, soft-topper, or full hard-shell on my '15.

Does the soft topper hold up to long periods on the highway? Is it taught enough to handle constant wind friction for 12 hours or so, if I were to drive that long?

I have been a Jeep guy for years so I'm familiar with the material, but didn't know if the same general taughtness was used for the Tacoma soft toppers.

    Any input is appreciated!

Anyone have something similar to what @csartor has done here? I love it. I want it. I need it.

Unfortunately, I lack the skills, machinery, and knowledge to do this for myself.

There's still 1/2-3/4 of an inch on each side.

Hey everyone new to TW here. Picked up my first Tacoma at the end of the summer. I live on the Western Slope in Colorado and drive up to the ski area 30 miles away to work and ski multiple days a week. Looking into the softopper as a viable alternative to a shell. Mostly just want to keep snow out of the bed and keep skis and gear dry. Also plan on using for camping in the summer. Do they hold up well to a high altitude heavy winter? I would assume so as they are from Boulder but just looking for opinions.

thanks for the reply. it will be driven daily so snow shouldn't be a problem. It will only be on the truck full time in the winter for now(we'll see it might end up a year round thing). I could see UV damage being an issue i live at 7,700 ft but regularly go up to 9,000+.

Disclaimer: I have never owned a Best Top for my Taco.

I have used Best Top for over a decade on my Jeeps (I'm a Taco AND Jeep guy, I know it's a sin) and their material is top notch. I have taken them through many heavy winters in the northeast - most without a garage - and they have always help us great. As DoorDing mentioned, just make sure that it's not just piling up for days on it. Also, as he mentioned, not that you would be taking your windows off in the cold anyways, but the material will tighten up quite a bit during the winter.

FWIW: I've had my Softtopper on my truck full time for almost 10 years now. It has seen a foot of snow on top without any issue at all. I haven't experienced any UV damage or issues either. In my experience, it has been easy to fold/unfold in all temperatures, but I haven't folded it up with a bunch of snow on the top. Honestly, I've been blown away by how well these things hold up.

Anyone ever dealt with water wicking through the straps that tie up the sides and back window, and dripping slightly on the bed floor? Drove home in a bad rainstorm tonight, and just put the topper on Sunday afternoon. It wasn't a ton of water, but I felt all the straps, and they were slightly damp. The ones for the back window more than the sides. Other than that, it was really dry! I'll put the seam sealer on when I get a few dry days in a row.

yes they are same toughness as convertible tops and jeep tops

install it [and re-tighten the rail bolts after the first 100 miles] and
then it can stay there for years

Does anyone have any concerns about security? Seems to me that anyone could come along with a knife and help themselves to whatever is in the bed.

As long as you've got a 120 lb german shepherd back there, its no issue.

It concerns me, so I'll make accomodations with lockable storage inside the bed. I just really like the look of the softopper, and it's like having a permanent tent in my bed.

As do I. In fact, I'm starting to like it more than the thought of buying a shell, but I have no interest in easily losing anything I have in the bed and, if I have to start buying all sorts of accessories to secure what I have in the bed then I might as well spend the money on the shell.

Knife? Why? All they need to do is open the back or undo the snaps. But getting into a fiberglass topper isn't really much of a challenge either. Having your stuff out of sight is 80% of the battle. And anything of real value should either be secured or not left in the bed in the first place whether its a soft or hard topper.
