As I mentioned above, these old rifles are pretty simple. If you can turn wrenches on the Taco, you probably bring this one back to life. Shaping and finishing wood is a bit of an art, but the rest of it shouldn't be hard.

Very Nice, I have a couple of CZ's (post 281) that I enjoy shooting, very accurate rifles.

I remember seeing those. Nice rifles. I have some other CZ rimfires as well, but haven't posted them here...been tempted, but they're not specifically LR.

I don't have a Ruger American, but I do have a Ruger 77/22, and it shoots really well. I've handled a few Americans, and appreciate the shorter bolt throw over the 77/22...should make mounting a scope easier. One thing I did not like about the American was the action of the bolt as it was pulled back and pushed ahead...it sounded like a zipper. There were some machining marks left inside the receiver that will smooth out with time and use. It's not a big deal, and won't cause any issues...just a 'detail' thing. The ones I looked at were early models, and this may have been taken care of by now.

I can't speak on accuracy, but reports I've read are all over the map, and mostly centered around the 'sporter' weight barrels. Generally speaking (at least with the 10/22), the factory 'target' barrels usually shoot better than the sporters...one would hope the same would apply. I can see the benefit of using 10/22 mags...there's a pile of 'em laying around here too.

That said, I'm going to give a gentle nudge in a different direction...at that (list) price point, consider a good look at the CZ 457 (American or Varmint). I think it is more gun for the money. Leftover new CZ 455s can likely be had for less than that, and are another good choice in that price range. Scope mounting can be a challenge with the 455 though, as it doesn't share the shorter bolt throw that the 457 and Ruger have. I like the tang safety on the Ruger, too. If it was my cash though, it would be a CZ 457 Varmint.

Handled and shot one at an Appleseed, along with a Ruger Precision Rimfire and a beat up CZ 452. Between those 3 I'd take the RPR if I wanted a chassis trainer or the Ruger American Rimfire Target if I wanted a traditional trainer. I did like the 10/22 mag capability, it makes things simpler to minimize magazine types.

To all my .22 rimfire experts out there...

I’m a long time recreational gun owner but sadly haven't invested much time/effort into learning the depths of the .22 cal world...

I want to get my son his first firearm and thought an entry level 22 rifle would be a great fit?
If you agree, what would be your top 3 rifle suggestions (brand & model) and why?

I want it to be reliable, easy to maintain, and affordable. No Gucci 22’s :D

And maybe for bonus... your top 3 pistols?

    Thanks!!

As others have said (in the GA thread), you can't go wrong with Ruger.

For a handgun, a Ruger Bearcat.

For a rifle, a bolt-action is a good choice. It will teach gun handling and sight use better than a semi-auto. Unless you want to single shot load a 10/22.

I can show you some good examples when we get together. Might even let you shoot them! :p

I ran out of .22 LRs to post, so I dug up some project rifles... A Beretta Super Sport semi-auto, a CIL Model 470 semi-auto, and a Winchester Model 61 pump. I'll post some pics as I work my way through 'em...

Took the Marlin out this week to get a feel for the scoped setup. Bushnell Banner CF500 3-9X40 mounted using a Leapers Accushot rimfire one piece mount. I was drilling a 1-5/8 gong about 8/10 times at 75 yards. It'll do fine for the next Appleseed.

Wow! I haven't seen one of those in years. That was my very first gun when I was a kid, back in the seventies. There is no telling how many rounds I fired through that thing when you could buy .22 ammo in the milk carton containers. Sadly that gun was stolen along with my 410 shotgun and my grandad's sweet sixteen when someone broke into our house.

Edit for more info...I haven't nailed down a production date yet, but I believe it was somewhere in the late '70s or early 80s. .22 LR intended as a target/trainer, originally came with a 19mm @ 50 m (~.75" @ 55 yards) 5-shot accuracy guarantee. Cool rifle, but long and heavy.

Had a couple of strays show up at the door this week...I call them Thing 1 and Thing 2. They are early 1960s BRNO model 581 semi-autos...steel and walnut Czech goodness.
