Here are a couple that are special to me

First is one of 3 Rossi combos that I own (2 are 22lr/20ga with Bushnell Trophy Scopes and the 3rd is their trifecta in 22lr/20ga/243 with a Nikon ProStaff 3x9x44 ) I bought these for me and my boys when they were little. They were the perfect platform to teach my sons the love, respect, and mechanics of shooting.

The Second is a work in progress. A Ruger 10/22 with a Tactical Solutions Green Fluted Barrel set into a custom Maple Stock. The Maple came from a tree that was grown, harvested, and slabbed by a member of our family who has since passed away. When finished it will be fitted with a very nice Vortex Scope. And will hopefully be passed down through generations and serve as a memorial to a great man who loved hunting and harvesting timber on his land.

I’m down to 600 grit now and still have a few deeper scratches. Once I get those out I will move to 1000 grit and then to some steel wool and a buffing cloth. Then I will oil it up. It is going to have some really nice tiger striping when I’m done.

Thank you. I am too. I’ve had it oiled a couple of times now in the sanding process and it is amazing. I will post follow up photos when done.

Did you think about using lacquer once you are finished with it? Lacquer can be very durable.

Yes. In fact here is another stock taken from the same tree that my brother-in-law and I worked on. This was taken just after the final coat dried.

    Nooooo! ;) https://www.woodcraft.com/products/...loWU5GojlRyGw5QFy5-pOcSbI3qpaPBEaAm1OEALw_wcB
After raising the grain thing, apply, let dry, then rub down with 0000 steel wool, take the gloss off and tack cloth. Repeat as many times as you like, at the end skip or very lightly for a satin finish rub with the wool. Try it, it leaves an awesome finish. If you ding it real good, raise it with a wet towel and an iron. IF needed rub the former ding with a bit of Tru oil and then wipe it off. Easy peasy, just takes some time.

My brother in law has used tru oil on several other stocks. This is precisely the process he has used. We experimented with lacquer to see if it would provide a more durable finish because the maple is soft. The process of raising the grain with a wet towel and iron intrigues me though.

Maple is so pretty. I have a couple of Brownings and a Savage in Maple stocks. Who did the woodwork/inletting? I have used the iron and wet rag trick a number of times to pull dents/dings out while refinishing...it works great, as long as the ding isn't sharp enough that wood fibres have been broken or cut. Round-edged dings/dents disappear like magic. Sharper edged dings/cuts are a little more work, and often don't come up 100%.

Tru-Oil works well, but if you are looking for a truly showy and durable finish, hand rub in a few coats of linseed oil, top it with an oil-based poly, then wet sand to a mirror finish. I did this on a 10/22 for my niece, and it's tough as nails.

Paid 99 bucks brand new from dicks last weekend since they are clearing out all their guns. 25 dollar mail in rebate on top so 75 bucks for a brand new left over mark ii.

Did a trigger job before I ever fired a round. Took it to the range today. Ran prolly 150-200 rounds down range. Best group at 50 yards with cci mini mags. It actually shot the bulk 555 Winchester pretty good as well.

Will throw it into the rotation for a squirrel gun. Honesty super impressed with the accuracy though.
