I don't have a sense of smell, but I have never heard that they smell like cheese. However, I just got off the phone with my mom and asked her about it, since she has Rexes, and she may have shed some light on this. Since, Rexes don't have a lot of hair, they have a tendency to attract dirt a little more than most cats, especially in their ears. So if they don't keep up with cleaning and you don't keep up with their ears, they can get yeast infections, and maybe where the "smell like cheese" comes from. That being said, we've had many Rexes, and only one of them had a problem with keeping themselves clean, in which case you have to give them a bath once in a while, which isn't a big deal. Ears are easy to clean too.

As for shedding... For the most part no, they don't really shed at all. However, I do have 1 Rex who sheds a ton. Also, some of them will "blow their coat" once in a while, not sure why. My mom has 2, both red boys, who blow their coat every summer, so they shed for a short period of time.

Now that I'm thinking of it, the 1 Rex that has trouble keeping up with his cleaning, the 1 that sheds a ton, and the 2 that lose their coat every summer are all from the backyard breeder that we rescued the 6 Rexes from, so their problems are most likely from bad breeding

And here are the rest of our cats:

Arthur, given to us by a friend of ours, who is a breeder, because his eye got scratched and she couldn't show him. He is about a year old.

Gidget, she was a foster who was really sick when we got her and when it came time to put her up for adoption we couldn't do it. She is about 2 years old.

My rescued Red Tonkinese. He purred so loud that we named him Hemi. Sadly, he was killed by a coyote a few months ago. He loved to hang out in the muhley grass in the front yard.

He was pretty bent about it. He still has all his claws, and my wife still only got bit once, and that was when she was using the blow dryer to dry him off.

I would like to introduce y'all to my cat who goes by a multitude of names...

squishy pushy moo moo cat (named by my elementary school friend)
    Lucky (her actual name)
B*&^% (what she gets called most of the time)

We found her on 4th of July- 17 years ago and she was unbeknownst to us, pregnant, couldn't have been more than 1 year old. But she was out on the streets while a firework show was going on and she was screaming under a car so we rescued her and put her in the bathtub with a heater blanket and left her to her own devices.

We put up signs for a month because after that night she didn't leave the house and she has been a wonderful little cat.

She's getting quite old and it's starting to show having to deal with my dog all day long, and having had 3 separate cat companions that have come and gone (none died, just moved to another household that adopted them) and 2 moves.

And finally here she is in all her tattered and torn glory...

    IMAG0224_zps45122b42_c8a585f1a7dd250e8c79fee613f6b4301cf4c21d.jpg

    IMAG0234_zps7ab38865_30473f9d2d11cc438e7a55785e7d9cfeece7ff07.jpg

    IMAG0206_zpsee5b9d47_bc2ee99ff8afedc4032d465076f34a1c4e445f9d.jpg

She hogs the couch and my dog is terrified of her.

He loves her but she's quite mean to him.

Although there are those special times when they are at least comfortable with each other.

    IMAG0069_zps3adb0821_dce63a2e827e9f0d12b26e3b887c477897079b0c.jpg

    He's mostly jealous though...

    IMAG0256_zpsebfa2c64_6925e768ed53dc15ae72e08917ae63a14a9dd99a.jpg

But she get's away with doing some pretty weird stuff so he will deal with it.

Back when I didn't like cats, there was one that changed my mind...

    Caillou
    [IMG]

    Well, actually 2, Boo...

We got Caillou from a rescue. He was found in the parking lot of a Petsmart, in a box, with 5 other kittens. It was 100* out that day, nobody knows how long they had been out there, and the box they were in was barely big enough for one of them let alone 6. 3 of the kittens died within a week, Caillou's sister died while being spayed. As far as I know Caillou's brother is doing okay. Caillou always had a stuffy nose and despite medication nothing ever helped. Christmas Eve he started having seizures and we ended up having to put him to sleep 4:00am Christmas morning. He was a special cat and I think he changed everyone in our house.

We got Boo, for Caillou. Every time we left the house Caillou would sit at the garage door and cry, so we got him a friend. They became best friends and Boo ran around the house looking for Caillou, crying for days. About 3 months after Caillou died, we found out that Boo had cancer, which led to heart failure. We had to have him put to sleep and to this day I still say he died of a broken heart.
