Oh man so sorry to hear this. It’s one thing to lose a cat knowing the outcome but when one disappears like that the “not knowing” really sucks. We had a cat that tried to leave the house to die and our neighbor found her in the bushes laboring to breath. I was working late that night in the rain, freezing cold and sick. Had to meet my wife at the animal hospital to put her down. Needless to say I called in sick the following day. I hope by some miracle she shows up hungry for a meal. With that said I reluctantly give you my deepest condolences.

Thanks for all the good words and condolences everybody! Grover and Lucy hung around for 3 or so years, according to photos on my phone. They become like family and you miss 'em when they're gone. They both got pregnant together and had their litters together - glad I was a part of that. Grover had to be embarrassed into nursing her first litter of 2 kitts - she saw me bottle feed them in a big cardboard box a few times, gave me a look one day then hopped in the box and took over from there. Lucy was more private about it, but she brought her kitts over once they were born. When they were pregnant they nuzzled and snuggled like they were sisters.

Lucy liked to steal Grover's food from her dish and Grover would just walk away and do nothing about it. Lucy had a voracious appetite until the last time I saw her. When I put out food for 2 other feral cats Lucy would see me and run from across the street to get her fair share - I still feed a mother and son on my porch. Grover had a funny quirk, she would walk and all of a sudden kick up a hind leg like she was kicking her heels. She was a carefree cat and funny to watch. Lucy, on the other hand, was more reserved! I would like to locate Lucy's remains so I can have her cremated and bring her inside to be with Grover and my other cat Robitussin.

i have a theory about that quirk. I believe it's an inbred habit of cats who in past generations had visited watering holes in the wild, and the kick-shake of a foot or two was to shake off the mud from the edge of the watering hole. Even some housecats that never go outside demonstrate that habit as they walk away from their meal dish. Kind of like a human who sits back and unbuttons the top button of his pants after dinner.

Interesting theory...makes sense. Just like when a cat kneads the ground as they drink water - that's how they got momma's milk from her teat; it's an instinctive response.
