Hahaha! Don’t let her fool you. She can be a little gremlin 10 minutes before your alarm goes off and at the climax of every movie you’re emotionally invested in. Heaven forbid you don’t file any important paperwork immediately… Our resident breathing paper shredder

Ok folks, I've already made an appointment to get Hobbes into the vets tomorrow but I was hoping to get some of your thoughts as to what might be going on.

Last night I got home from work and he met me at the door as usual and we went through the normal evening routine. I had received a package from Amazon and sat it down next to my chair prior to opening. Hobbes came over to investigate as normal but when I bent down to pet him things went sideways immediately. He started violently and ran away and spent the next 2 or three hours cowering and acting like he was terrified of me whenever I approached him. I even called him into the kitchen for treats and he stayed hidden under the dining room table and that's definitely not normal. Later in the evening I went to the bathroom and while sitting there he came in and indicated he wanted pets which is normal and which I gave him plenty of. For the rest of the evening everything was fine again and he spent the night curled up in bed with me like usual.

This morning I got up and petted him on the bed while getting dressed and then, as usual I asked him if he wanted some treats and he headed down the hall with me following, again, as usual but half way down the hall he suddenly stopped and cowered away from me again then ran into the dining room and hid under the table while I was getting ready to leave for work. He refused even to come out when I called him for treats and that's more than a little scary because he does love his treats.

As I said before I made an apt. at the vets for tomorrow because such a sudden and complete behavior change is very concerning but in the meantime does anyone have any idea what might be going on? He's about 13 years old and I've raised him since he was a kitten and he's always been my shadow. I can't make a lap without him in it and to have him act like he thinks I'm going to beat him has me really worried.

Man I know that’s tough! I’d have to say it’s nearly 100% a smell thing. The timing of the behavior change and Amazon package coming are too ironic. Some of the Chinese made products have a really bad smell in the original packaging especially with clothing type items. I’d put that package and it’s contents in the garage and wash your hands. Other than that let him come to you for pets and scratches.

Yeah, and I could kick myself for not doing just that, taking the box to the garage that is. I considered it but instead I just kind of moved it off to one side. Still, last night when he started acting normal again he walked right past it to jump up in my lap as I was sitting in my chair. It's got a new coffee maker in it but I don't think that's relevant. I was too upset by Hobbes' behavior last night to get around to opening it.

I think smell is something that can trigger some weird behavior. With the whole saga of Louisa being missing for 16 days and when she came home amos ran right up to her, smelled her butt and then her neck. He then blew a gasket. Started growling and hissing and then ran away. This lasted for about 5 days before things returned to normal. He obviously smelled something on her that he didn’t like but it wasn’t because he forgot what she looked like.
Good you’re taking him the the vet though, better safe than sorry. Maybe he’s in pain from something and it’s triggering that behavior. Keep us posted please!!!

And that's another possibility because, and I just can't be sure of this, when he was acting scared of me and running away it kind of looked like he was favoring his right front leg. It didn't seem to slow him down much though and I couldn't see that it was bothering him when he jumped on or off my lap or the bed.

That reminded me of Constantine when he had the cat in his lap and his feet were in the water before taking a trip to the other side. :notsure:
