Well guess Momo was ready for his Thai food.

let me just say the Thai cart a couple miles down the road from my house is awesome!

Momo is a punk, and always seems to feel the need to be close to me. but here just before the pic was up on the table trying to pop the lid free.

I have an update about Gracie's experience with Solensia, and unfortunately it's not good. Along with all of the positive results, we noticed after her first injection that she was yelling a little at night after being a basically silent cat previously. Out vet put it down to her felling better and getting a little more frisky. After the second shot she cried most of the night for a few days. We failed to make the connection, and I feel awful about that. After her third shot last week, she cried all night, every night. We really started paying attention to her to see if we could figure out what was wrong, and she appears to have gone deaf over the time since her first injection. We made this discovery over the weekend, and I immediately read the package insert and any other clinical information that I could find. There is no documented case of Solensia causing deafness directly - damaging the inner ear or the auditory nerve - but something called otitis externa is listed as a rare (~2%) side effect. Otitis externa is when the ear canal gets inflamed, and it can actually close up making it impossible to hear. We think this is what's going on. We took her to the vet yesterday and she confirmed the hearing loss and some visible inflammation, at least as deep as she can see with a basic scope. She also contacted the manufacturer to report the reaction, and they were very supportive and offered assistance getting additional testing done if needed. We all assume that the yelling is a secondary reaction to suddenly going deaf and getting scared in the dark. She doesn't have great eyesight either, so I feel that this is accurate. She's quiet during the day as long as one of us is visible, but she sometimes starts yelling out of nowhere if neither of us is in the room.

We are starting with steroid eardrops to see if we can get the inflammation to go down and get her hearing back. We are taking her off of the Solensia as well, and will treat her arthritis another way once we can get this situation sorted. I'll be absolutely gutted if the deafness is permanent, but we're not thinking about that yet.

Be careful putting your cat, or yourself, on brand new drugs. I think we sometimes rush to "new and improved", but in my personal and professional opinion it's prudent to wait for awhile until the number of patients is higher and some time has gone by to see if weird side effects pop up. I made this mistake with Gracie, and I should have known better.

Sorry to hear about your kitties problems. I sincerely hope it isn’t the Solensia and she improves. We started our cat on it over a year ago and our vet started her cat on it at the same time. Since it was a new drug our vet has been watching both her and our cat very closely for any side effects. She examines and checks our kitty thoroughly every injection time (without charge). So far both cats are doing well.
Keep in mind many older cats start yowling in their old age. Ours did months before he started Solensia. Our friends cat who is 16 years old and not on Solensia started about 2 years ago yowling randomly for no apparent reason no known medical issues other than an eye problem. I have researched this and found that it is often no reason or idiopathic, they just yowl. I have also read that hyperthyroidism and kidney disease is associated with yowling as is deafness and some other diseases.
We had a discussion of Solensia recently myself with a medical background, our friend with the 16 y/o cat a retired university hospital pharmacist and another friend a retired vet who had her own cat only practice. Actually it was about 7 months ago. Our conclusion basically was it’s a new drug, we couldn’t find any red flags, and just keep checking for side affects through observation and researching reports and literature as it becomes available.
