Well,
After getting scammed out of $850 for what we thought was a Maine Coon kitten, I started doing the deep dive research on what actual breeders should be like.........what I shoukd have done frim the jump.

Finding out that all real breeders have extended and
long wait lists, and being listed on the official TICA website were good starting points.

We ended up contacting some of these breeders including one from Michigan. I actually spoke to a live person there, the owner and his wife. We even had a long Face-time call where we got to actually see the kitten, as well as where he is being raised and socialized. Really nice people, who as breeders who had been doing this a long time were ALL too familiar with these types of scammers that we fell for.

The system this cattery uses feels like a much safer way to purchase a pure breed cat.

After much discussion and nearly 3 weeks of them going through the 3 or 4 people ahead of us on the wait list for the only big black smoke male kitten they had in this last litter.
Two people had already found kittens with another breeder, one person didn't understand the full price of the cat and bowed out, and the last person ahead of us delayed the cattery a week trying to come up with the funds, but could not in the end.

That left my wife and I next on the list.....
After the Face-time call we both felt much better about everything and after reviewing their operation as well as them being registered on the TICA site, we proceeded with the adoption.
In the case of this legit breeder, they asked for 0 money up front except an old fashioned paper check to hold him, while the rest would be paid in cash when physically picking up the kitten. Knowing how checks link to a bank and an official name and residence also made us both feel better about the legitimacy of it all.

He should be ready the weekend of Oct 5th and we are planning to drive up to get him.

He's got a great mix of playfulness, cuddly and calm. With his beautiful mix of smoke markings mixed in with the black, he's quite the little stunner (but likely NOT little for long!)...

Sorry for the disaster you went through with the other experience. It's just awful what people will do to each other.
