Her cat hated me when we started dating. Six months later it was belly rubs any time I was around. Give it some time, work in small steps. Patience.

 

I think you missed the entire conversation. I don’t have a problem with Sam. He’s my cat and won’t leave my side. It’s trying to get him across country.

 

Many people have done what you're going to do. Just get Sam used to car rides. Talk to your vet about what you are going to do and see what they recommend about calming medication, Get a carrier that allows him a dark area so he can feel safe. A car harness would be a good idea too, l think. Small litter box with litter.
Cleaning supplies in case he has an accident. Some t-shirts or other clothing with your scent on them. Keep.him close to you so he can see, hear and smell you.

Each cat is so different. It won't be the easiest thing you, or he has done. But they adapt.

So it’s true cats do know their names. Now I know that mine are just choosing to ignore me. Cats really know more than most think. Every time my wife comes home Amos, who’s generally pretty quiet, starts running around the house, excited and crying up a storm. I’ll go look out front and yup “mamas home”. He know the sound of her car and realizes she’s not home. He does not do this when I come home even if I’m driving my wife’s car. Meaning he can differentiate what car is what and who’s driving it based on who’s currently home and who isn’t. This is behavior that I’ve generally seen in dogs. The difference is dogs get excited no matter what and I don’t think they evaluate who is or who isn’t home.

 

Our cat's definitely know their names, but Enzo is the only one who comes running to you like a dog. Cutest fuckin thing ever, especially cause he chirps and squeaks as he's talking back to you

 

We always had dogs, never owned a cat then one day this little black cat showed up at the house right before hurricane Sandy hit NJ. We set him up in the garage and he lived with us for the rest of his life. Glad he made it to North Carolina when we moved, unfortunately he died about 3 months after we got here.
