Proof that cats truly are liquids. Toni was hanging out right next to the stove, soaking up the heat. Patted her and she was scalding hot on my hand, so I took her temperature. 150 degrees and not even simmering yet.

He's very ticklish on both hind feet. Usually a light touch will make him shake his leg violently then do the cleaning thing. If I persist then...it's on.

Yeesh. Some of those are pretty funny, but some of them are pretty cringe-y; people letting their kids keep pushing when the cat clearly isn't into it...

I was the same way. We had a couple swatty cats, one who didn't know to hold his claws in, the other was just a great fighter - during our kid's baby years, and those kids would do the same, we would try to swoop in, but never once did those cats scratch the kids - all the while the cats scratched me more than once!

As a disclaimer, I don't have kids. So I'm being a Monday Morning QB about it. But I really do feel that a lot of damage that kids take from animals is a direct result of the parents not stepping in and teaching their kids to respect the pet.

Well some kids learn pretty good the first time :)

I'm just saying we have been lucky with all our critters and kids.

If a kid gets scratched pissing off a cat, then that should be a life lesson for the kid. Don't play with fire, and animals that don't take shit from humans.

There's a photo of me at 2 years old with fang marks on my cheek lol, we had a calico cat that was very aggressive and would hiss/swat/bite easily.

As the parent of a 1 year old I can tell you, no matter how many times you tell/show a baby or 1 year old toddler to be gentle with the cat, they are still going to pull, grab, scream in their face, etc. They aren't old enough to understand yet and it's what kids do.

Of our two cats, Mai Tai just avoids her like the plague. Harley on the other hand is a very social cat, he always wants to be wherever everyone else is. But he does bite (I have the scars to prove it). He's been incredibly patient with our daughter though, 9/10 he'll just get up and move if he doesn't like how she's interacting with him. I've had to pull her back though on a number of occasions when I feel he might not be in the mood, and there have been a few swats here and there. And she's a little more careful around him now because of that.

At the end of the day I would never blame the cat for acting like a cat. Harley has his limits and we try our best to ensure that they are respected so no one gets accidentally hurt, and to set an example of how to pet him so he's happy and not irritated. I'm equally as afraid that she may accidentally hurt him as I am of him hurting her, and I don't want either of them hurt.

Understood, but as a parent you'd think that these people would put their phone down and grab the kid while the cat is backed into a corner, hissing & growling, rather than waiting until the they start doing a speed bag routine on the kid's head, lol.

Yeah kids should always be supervised when around pets. I didn't see the original post that started this convo, I'll have to go back and look.

The nice thing about cats is they self-regulate their own surroundings pretty well, so usually they can remove themselves from an irritable situation before it happens. why Mai Thai is always on the other side of the house before my daughter enters whatever room he's in.
