Please welcome the newest member of the Salty_Dog household. He is a 13-week old Collie puppy my wife found on a website called BuckeyePuppies(.)com which features available puppies in Ohio. It's had to find Collie puppies these days so we had to look far and wide. We fell in love with him sight-unseen except for his picture, contacted the family and put down a deposit the week before Easter. He is one of a litter of nine born on a farm owned by a nice Mennonite family. He's got AKC papers and everything. Mourning the loss of Big Dog Scooter notwithstanding, we wanted another dog to keep Little Dog company and I needed one for therapeutic reasons too.

When he get him AKC registered his official name will be Shreveo's Big Chief Fire on the Mountain, but his everyday call-name will be Sebastian; this in keeping with family tradition that dog names must start with an S. In time we will get him certified as a therapy dog like his predecessor.

Wifey, the other dog and I drove to Morgantown WV (our home town) this past Friday afternoon and stayed overnight with family. Saturday morning, we got up early and began a marathon trip to Ohio and then back to Fredericksburg; not getting home until almost midnight. This family's farm is out in the country in the area west of Akron. And I say out in the country, I mean WAY out in the country; the sort of place where you need a pipeline to bring in the sunlight. I had to put my truck in 4WD just drive on some of the roads.

Anyway, we picked up the pooch, did the paperwork, exchanged the balance of funds, and started on our way home. Five minutes into the trip, he threw up setting off an adventure to find the best way to keep an anxious puppy calm, cool and collected on his first-ever ride in a vehicle; the fact that it was a 400-mile trip lasting nine hours only adding insult to injury.

What finally worked was Wifey sitting in the back seat, with the puppy lying beside her, Little Dog Shannon in the front passenger seat and me driving. By the time we got home we had already gone through about 15 Piddle Pads, a whole roll of paper towels and half a can of Wet-Wipes.

He still seems a little nervous but had an otherwise uneventful night. He wants to play with Little Dog. Little Dog will have nothing of it.

    Stay tuned.

That's precisely how my dog's adventure started. Congratulations!

The adventure never really ends. Neither my dog nor I have ever seen a Pelican in Colorado...much less in our backyard.

Alright y’all, took the fur kids for a walk. All was well until the little guy started limping and licking at his back paws. I thought he had a sticker or something, but it turns out his back paws are like torn or peeling. The right is worst. Has a good chunk folding over. Never had this before. How the heck do I fix it?? He’s limping around the house.

Not a great pic, but see the middle pad, it flips up.

Liquid bandage and some medical tape. The problem is he’s going to chew on it.

My old hound did that on a piece of glass and we were forever trying to keep him from chewing on it. The liquid bandage helped hold the flap down long enough for new pad to grow back beneath it.

Trying some bag balm like someone up above mentioned, and wrapped with some self gripping tape. We'll see what happens.

Never had pad issues with any dogs. :annoyed:

Licking the pads isn’t a bad thing. You can go the bag balm route and there’s even a product for helping toughen the pads called Tuf-Foot.

Usually, a walk on hot pavement is enough to cause blistering. Booties are a great idea.

Riley’s has had blisters and cuts and each time we hit the vet, it’s the same thing. Let him lick and if anything changes, bring him back. Knock wood, we haven’t had to go back.

Happened to a dog of mine before. A neighbor kid hucked a tennis ball on the blacktop and he tore it so it was flapping around. We avoided the vet. Make a mixture of Epson salt/water in a cup. Dip the paw in the cup, let it sit as long as you can, then dip it in a separate cup of plain water to rinse. The paw actually heals pretty quickly. Keeping it clean is the key. Good luck!
