I have a question for current dog owners

Should I get a purebred Siberian Husky puppy as a first dog or a purebred Labrador Retriever puppy?

Depends on your life style. What do you like to do? Which breed is happier doing what you like to do.... If either fits, then a lab

    completely stock
two completely different breed that act total opposite. My husky was super hyper all the time loved to run, kind of a flight risk (always trying to get out) once hed run he was impossible to catch because if he didnt want to come, he wouldnt. huskys can be pretty tough to train...alot tougher than a lab. huskys like to do their own thing very independent. Labs are very much people dogs, they listen, they are easy to train... ive had both. Huskys are beautiful but take more effort overall. They shed like a mofo too

I am always outdoors and around town

I think I will go with the lab due to ease of training and the weather down here is better for him

Go with a Lab...much easier for you to train and for them to train you. They are mostly motivated by food making it easier for the two of you to learn to live together. It also helps them (you) to understand rewarding...

I have three huskies, so I can give you my perspective. I have never had a Lab or spent much time with a lab, so I can't compare the two. What others have said about huskies being hyper is somewhat correct. It just depends from dog to dog.

Our gray (MacGyver - we call him Mac) and black (Reese - like the Peanut Butter Cup) Husky are both five years old. My wife trained them real good when they were young. They know all kinds of tricks and we even professionally trained. They are both pretty mellow, but they can be really energetic at times too. Mac is like a grumpy old man and likes to be on his own, while Reese likes to play around 3/4 of the time.

The brown one (Glacier) is 2.5 years old. He has a lot more energy than the other two, it also takes him longer to catch on to the training. But he likes to be around my wife and I nonstop. He always wants to cuddle.

All three know lots of tricks, heel on command and come when we whistle. But they have their days when they are stubborn and want to do their own thing. Training does take time, but once they are trained they are good to go. All three can stay in the front yard (that doesn't have a fence) no problem with people and dogs walking down the sidewalk. A few times they have seen a squirrel or something and started running after it, and then their hearing turns off and they are down the street a block or two.

You might get a mellow Husky or you could get a super hyper one like my friend has, I have seen both ends of the spectrum. Either way be prepared for lots of training. I have noticed that Huskies seem to have a unique personality, its quite comical. Oh yes, the shedding is a bit much, we have a "Fur-minator" de-shedding brush and it works wonders.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

One of the only reasons I would not want a Husky is the fact that their coats are so thick that the weather down here would be hell for one
