Be very careful of the high jumps. We had a Rotti and I tied a tire from a tree. He loved jumping for it until he tore his ACL

Yeah man super scary. She might lick you to death. She's not a barker either, unless there are dogs on TV.

    Not my dog, but dog-related.

While doing some sightseeing earlier this week, I stumbled upon this. In the historic Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia there stands a cast-iron statue, about three feet tall, of a Newfoundland Dog.

Around 1862, a little girl named Bernadine Rees would regularly visit a merchant's shop with her mother. The dog statue was outside of the merchant's business. The 2-year old girl loved the dog statue and would pet and talk to the "dog" whenever she visited. Later, the little girl fell victim to scarlet fever and passed away, and the mother was inconsolable. Little Bernadine was buried in the Rees family plot in the Richmond Cemetery. The merchant had been to the funeral, and offered up the dog statue to place on the child's grave, since she had loved it so when she had been alive.

The dog has stood guard on her grave ever since, and people periodically leave small gifts such as pennies and little toys as tokens of esteem or for good luck. The area of the cemetery where the grave is located is now known as "black dog hill."

There is a somewhat parallel legend that says when the Civil War broke out some people wanted to take the dog, melt it down, and cast it into bullets. That seems a little odd since bullets are usually made out of lead; not iron. Maybe they meant cannon balls. In any event, it was moved here because then it would be part of a grave site and therefore couldn't be moved.

After talking with a fellow member, I made a trip out to Sutter to see a puppy. I met with the breeder and we talked a bit more about what I was looking for. They had a 12w old chocolate who was the last of his litter. I played with him, his retrieving skills were amazing, he was full of energy, and such a good dog.

    IMG_9497 2.jpg
This is a picture of said 12w old puppy.

I asked if I could have a bit of time to think about it--truth be told, I still think about Riley and I miss him terribly. If I was going to get him, I would also need to get some things for him and schedule a vet visit and pick up a crate. Long story short, I picked him up a week later. It's hard not to compare the two dogs and I have had to constantly remind myself he is not Riley. He just got the last of his shots and is pretty much free to go anywhere.

He is crazy. He is a good boy. He is growing like a weed. He loves to carry his leash. He will also carry his Kong or a bumper on a potty mission. Not crazy about the fact he puts everything in his mouth though.

Over the last couple of months he's been home, he has been doing really well with potty training. He's attending puppy socials and you can see the change this has had with respect to confidence and getting along with other dogs. I'm taking him to a larger day care place next week so he can play all day. He'll start training now that we can go whereever.

I have always waited for however long to name my dogs. I knew what his name was before I left the breeder. His name is Kimo (KEE-mo). It's a Hawai'ian name--he's got a lot of Aloha spirit.

    IMG_9573.jpg

    IMG_9639.jpg

He's 19w now and has outgrown crate #1. We're on #2 and I'm sure he will outgrow this one--when crated, you don't want them to have too much room or they learn to pee and poop in the crate. I have Riley's large crate and the other day, I tried to get Kimo to go in and he absolutely refused. Went back to his and walked right in.

Kimo was bred by Dustin Retrievers in Sutter, CA. They are out off of W. Butte Road. They have a place in Twin Falls, MT and breed Chesapeake Retrievers there. They have been great to work with.

One of the phrases that best describe the breed is "All foods must go to the lab for testing". Some are much more insistent on their role as food quality technician than others.

There can be a tendency to over feed them too. Gotta watch that like a hawk. In their younger years, this can lead to joint problems later in life.
