That's a horrible idea. What time?
I'm a little torn/ confused by this. I read an article by a vet who said that Science Diet, Acana, Purina are all the lead researchers in pet food. And they incorporate organ meat before muscle meat. Thier reasoning is that wild dogs and there brethren wolves, etc. go for organ meat first on a fresh kill. When I adopted Tessa the breeder was using a puppy food made by Science Diet. I continued this and she didn't miss a beat with the food. And we haven't had those stool issues. Or any other dietary issues. And the treats I get are the same thing, primarily liver although I do get some made with fruits and veggies. If I can find the article, I'll post it.

Puppy bragging time. This is a smart dog. About five minutes of zooming after potty break, and look where she laid down. In front of the fan. She got up for water, and laid back down in front of the fan. Self taught. Smart pup. Proud dad.

There's nothing wrong with it. She just said it can cause digestive issues.

it depends on which organs and also which animal. for instance, turkey is considered a low-residue meat, so it's easily broken down and the poo is mushy (for humans and animals). Red meat like beef requires more effort to break down and digest (as long as it isnt ground down super fine) - compare eating a steak vs. eating a hamburger with the same amount a chewing - the hamburger is already processed before it's in your mouth.

Hearts and gizzards are made of muscle tissue compare to liver, which is more mushy... so the poo will be different after a liver dinner vs. gizzards...

so if i give liver, i make sure to include kibble and other binder-type foods like chicken chunks and veggies... so the poo will be more solid than liver alone

    Yeah.
Many foods use corn as a filler, which is tough to digest. You know, you've seen that kernel that made it all the way through completely unscathed. Science Diet used to be one of these foods, but it looks like they've moved away from it. I've used Nutro Lamb and Brown Rice food for years. On the rare occasion I have run out or been unable to get it, I've used Purina One.

Been stopping him after starting his feast around three times via voice commands, making him wait, and then start again. He is so good about food.

    Good boy.

    Same.

Kilo likes to eat gofers that he catches. My wife just cringes when he breaks up the bones and then swallows it whole.

Corn and rice then poultry are the things I'd stay away from. Brown rice is better. Poultry ranks near the top food allergen wise.

Riley had skin allergies, not terrible, but changing his food to a more novel protein helped so I've stayed away from poultry with Kimo too. I do ask from time to time what the vet feeds. Just recently, she said Purina ProPlan which surprised me mostly because I've stayed away from that for whatever reason but the biggest reason she gave is you can almost always find it on the shelf--she's got three labs.

When you buy your dog kibble look at the first ingredients if they are wheat or corn they are just a filler. Acana and Orijen do not use fillers.

I try to give my pup a verity. It’s all kibble which I know isn’t the best. I mix it up between a salmon recipe and a lamb recipe and for the third I alternate between a chicken or beef recipe. I really don’t think he cares because his bowl is empty in 60 seconds.
My vet recommended the hill science food but I don’t agree with the company.

That is one intense gaze. That boy is NOT letting 'dem eggs leave his sight. I can just hear his thoughts: "Mmmm...they look ready. They must be done. Are they done yet!? Those are mine, right!? Yea, those are mine."

Probably his exact thoughts. I fed him yesterday at 5 PM and this shot was around 14 hours later…he was ready. :D

There's a lot more to dog food than the ingredients list. Things like percentages of protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Ingredients, etc. The two you list are considered "grain free" which is a good thing. Same with their guaranteed analysis. Dog Food Advisor rates it a 4. Grain free diets are being investigated by the FDA for their link to dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs--nothing proven and nothing specific to any brand or breed. However, Acana is the most frequently reported diet. Just something to be aware of.

I guess the bottom line for me is continue the dialog with Kimo's vet as needed.

If you notice when you visit a Vets office all you see is Hills food. My bet is they are all in the push the Hills food. If you look at the quantity of the cardiomyopathy percentage of dogs getting it is infinitesimal. If you ask me palms are being greased by Hills Science Diet.

    Yeah.
Well, that, and they have a diverse line of specialty foods that may be recommended for certain health conditions. I think that's their niche. I think I've only tried their food once, though, and other "premium" brands seem to be catching up on their variety.

The breeder I got my first Basenji from recommended the Nutro Lamb and Brown Rice over 30 years ago, and all my various dogs have had it since with no issues, and quite the opposite. There was a short period where one of the big Petsmart/Petco retailers stopped carrying it and I temporarily switched to something else (I forget what it was). My dogs' skin started flaking and their coats were not as shiny/silky. It could have just been the stress of the change, but once I found where to get it again it only took a week to get back to normal. Not the best ratings on Dog Food Advisor, but not terrible.

I guess I just follow the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach. Most of my dogs have lived long, healthy lives without any major issues, and certainly none related to nutrition. My female Brussels Griffon made it to 16.5 years and her teeth looked like she was no more than 5. If your dog is doing well on what they are eating, I'd say stick with it.

Poor Ted, no green grass here. We haven’t had any rain for awhile now. The way he zips around the yard with his frisbee I’m afraid he’s going to catch it on fire.

Dog Food Advisor, which I referenced, is not the vet. Neither is the FDA. I even said there’s no link they have found yet. However, these are the stats they have gathered. It’s science.

Do with it what you want but highly unlikely there’s any palms being greased unless it’s over specialty diets sold at the practice. Most customers are not candidates for the types of diets sold by my vet.
