I only had the leash on him because I don't want him chasing a squirrel out onto a cliff. Usually he's off-leash and right at my boots while hiking. First dog I've owned that never goes more than 20 ft from me on the trail. It's quite remarkable

yeah I was gonna say, I'm sure my Husky would love that environment but I know for a fact he would chase a squirrel or marmot right off the edge of a cliff, he goes full-predator mode when he sees small animals. And he would probably take me with him if I had the leash in my hand lol.

My last dog was a husky too and she chased a huge mtn goat out on a small cliff, fell off about 25 ft down and cut the crap out of her paw. She was friendly with all other dogs and humans but her recall was terrible and she'd run right up to everybody to say hi. Obsessed with squirrels and rabbits, always wanted to be out in front leading "the pack". Would run straight toward danger like a police dog

This boy is completely different. Isn't really comfortable around other dogs, gets scared easily, but it's manageable because he comes quick every single time I call him and he sticks close. Not interested in leading at all, he defers to me in every questionable situation.

yeah Huskies are like that, super friendly and loyal but when something activates their prey drive all bets are off. I can usually contain him if it's on our walks or in our yard, I've saved a few possums and squirrels from certain death by him (not all though).

But on a cliff ledge like that...I think it's probably better we just don't risk it haha. Glad yours didn't get too hurt by that fall, sounds intense

That was a rough day, we were still 2 hours from the truck. She walked out on her own, too big to carry. Tough as nails till the very end. She passed away 2 weeks ago peacefully at the house

Amazing Pics!!! I miss the mountains so much! Here are a couple of my old Husky in the Flat Tops, CO - Devil's Causeway.
Super sketchy, I had her off leash also, drops are almost 1,000 foot off each side. We made it across, but I had to carry her some, because the rocks were so uneven, almost bouldering across some spots, but we camped on the other side. What an amazing trip.

One thing I remember - Camping in a huge bowl like that - all the wildlife noises become very loud, and she didnt sleep at all. Was on guard all night staring at the tent wall waiting for something to wander by :)
    But Yes - Great times.
