Just figured I’d repost (see post 33169) my rescue, got him back in June he’s seven months now (original post he was 3 months).
He is a unique dog to say the least. Super smart and such a clown….. love this boy he is a joy to have as a friend.

Slept on the pull-out last night because we had a couple of late check-ins. Guess it was 03:00 when I went back to the bedroom. This was at 06:00 this morning when we got back up.

 

Well Commander has been expelled from the white house! That office should have the worlds best dog trainers at it's disposal but again we see not a bad dog but a bad owner. Who refused to use the resources available to them to guide their dog thru a needed learning time in their life.

There's a guy who comes to the dog friendly pub I hang out at and he has a german sheppard that has been professionally trained and it goes after everyone else's dog. He has a lot of trouble trying to hold it back and it once almost went through the front window. The owner finally had to ask him to stop bringing it in. I don't know if it's in the breed but it's definately in the dog.

 

Guy didn't keep up with the training.

That's why you socialize your k9 and keep training day in and day out. Mine had a problem with small dogs but we kept training and now no issues. I had mine professionally trained and train every day.
Malinois twice as hyper as a GSD and half the size. Home and personal protection,all around good dog.

The wife just came back with a Halloween/Fall themed outfit for the dog. She is not happy wearing it.

We have had five GSDs and they all shared characteristics and they all had individual characteristics. The males were more guard oriented than the females, but it is in the breed. None of the five we have had behaved that way around other dogs. They were socialized with other animals, cats included, people, and children from the very beginning as little puppies.

Just as @Tiedie said, the training never stops. You have to keep training so they know your are the alpha, not them.

Commander's issue is a bad owner.

 

That’s too bad. Getting a pet (especially a puppy!) is a huge responsibility. I’d rather see the pup go to a good home that will take the time and put in the effort. I’m sure he will find a good home.

 

The GSD characteristics put them in the loyal and protective category. Not spending the time working with your dog is not good for you or the dog. I'm not really all that surprised as both Major and Commander are now banned from the WH. The job is pretty demanding and I think that's one of the reasons you see smaller dogs in the first dog role.

Eh, we don't know the whole story. The White House is no place for a dog that is not well-trained, well-socialized, and well-monitored. Too much activity, too many new and different people moving through there. What's his job? Probably best for that poor dog to be in a different environment. Lap dogs are more suited to that kind of environment.

 

The reality is, it's not a place for dogs.
