I would avoid the canned food altogether. That's just me though.

If you want to swap foods, it's easier if you can go from 25 percent to 100% new over a week or two (preferably two). But if you can't, cold turkey and just deal with the trots for a few days. If you added anything, I'd say stick with the Science Diet ID or something similar (it's a very bland canned food usually reserved for dogs with stomach issues).

BTW, if the dog won't eat, take it away and don't feed until the next feeding. Once the dog realizes it's eat it or lose it, you should be OK. Sounds harsh--the idea is to have a meal be over in a few minutes (30 tops). Anything left over goes back (dry food). I do this mostly because I don't want critters eating the food or having ants in his dish and also because if he eats on a regular schedule, he poops on a regular schedule--sounds gross but helps a lot in the long run.

Good luck however you decide to switch over.

I thought about canned food, but i didnt want him to get spoiled on it and only want that. I dont think he has a sensitive stomach, just not fond of the fish, but like i said im ok with him not liking that brand its pretty expensive, the 4 Health food is kinda in the middle and he likes it just fine.

But I dont have the heart to take it away from him right now, hes about 5-8 lbs underweight, you can feel some ribs and spine. The vet records said he weighed around 32lbs when he initially went in and now hes only 25, so I figure 30 should be his norm weight (minus the 2lbs for his back leg)

I still have about half his food of the Purina One Smart Blend that im going to use up before he gets switched over completely to the 4 Health. So its going to be a very slow mixture so i dont upset his tummy too bad.

How much are you feeding? What you could do is break it up into three meals (harder to deal with for you maybe).

When I suggested the ID, it wasn't because of the sensitive tummy thing but because it is bland and might help the transition process (most canned dog food is incredibly rich and made to look like you or I would eat it). For what eve reason, swapping dog foods, even just different brands of the same thing, can cause huge issues and the less you add to the process, the better it goes (I've done it 4 times now).

Sounds like you're all set for the change! Good luck!

LMAO...don't coat the food in grease but add a teaspoonful then stir it up. I take it your giving him BB in the Red pkg. try the blue pkg...I bet he'll eat it. It's got brown rice in lieu of the fish. Still BB is an excellent food! BUT I WILL NEVER FORGET...."MOM KNOWS BEST!';)

I think his 4 Health is chicken and brown rice he chowed down no problem with it. And yes its the BB in the red package. I'll find something to do with it, since he didnt even want a small handful mixed in with his Smart Blend.

Im ok with only spending 30$ for 30lbs of food instead of 50$ for 30lbs. The ingredients sound just as good. The main things im looking for in it is the Omega fatty acids and glucosamine for his skin and joints. Thanks.:D

I had a senior moment when thinking what the BB blue bag had in it and yes it's chicken n rice. Are you close to Savannah Ga. (Within two hours) If so I'll drive to your location and buy your food...my 6 chirruh (5 rescues) love the red and white. But I mix it with the blue to serve plus I put a tablespoon of the bb stew in with their food. Yes I spoil my kids and I know I'm a "bad daddy" for doing it but they enjoy it....
