E-collars are great training tools and can be good for safety too, if used properly. I suggest one with the beep function, when training, beep first then shock if needed, after a while you will typically only need to beep them an they will respond. Most important thing is to use it responsibly, don't break your dog.

If you are a serious hunter you may want to push some more not to have him fixed. Its a possibility that it will reduce his drive or at the very least energy level. As far as the electronic training collars if used correctly they can really help. His diet may have to change some people claim having your animal fixed makes them gain weight, BS energy goes down food consumption will have to change and exercise will have to increase.

One case does not give you proof to the contrary, either. Unneutered dogs are at higher risk for cancer. Many of these are reproductive cancers or related to reproductive hormones which have less impact in a neutered dog.

Most opposition I see to neutering is from assuming your dog would feel the same way you do. But dogs aren't people, male dogs don't recognize their own puppies as theirs, dogs don't raise a puppy for 18 years. Go check out some vet med journals, the science is pretty clear that neutering a dog contributes to its longer life.

Dogs have a tendency to gain weight after being neutered, but the bottom line is they won't gain weight if they use as many calories as they eat. Walk/exercise your dog appropriately and don't overfeed and it won't get fat. :)

Labs are notorious chow hounds. Either way you'd need to watch his diet/exercise routine to keep his weight in check.

Your correct one example is nothing. My point is unless you can take that exact same dog and give it 2 lives then you can't prove either. I'm not saying unaltered is better but but there is not proof that altered is better. In all of history wild animals aren't fixed, people either, and yet they strive. I've been raised by dog people, family members were dog breeders (not Millers.) And not once have I seen an unaltered dog have an issue because of it being intact. And on the flip side I haven't seen an issue caused by being fixed. My point is there is no great benefit, some maybe but its the same on both sides, after being fixed the animals change. There are just as many infections that can occur after the surgery than before. And Vet Med Journels are swayed because they are the people that get paid whenever you side with their point of view. I do agree that most people should have their animals fixed, simply because they don't work their animals and not everyone should breed. There is no reason in hell to breed a pet just to have more pets. Fixing to better the animal is Hype unless the pet requires the surgery to survive.

I doubt it will reduce his drive to retrieve or his energy level. My dog is neutered and is easily one of the highest energy dogs I've ever owned. No lack of desire to retrieve either.

All dogs need monitoring with regard to diet.

It doesn't affect all dogs the same. But can you guarnatee that his dog won't be calmed down after the procedure? I can't, but is sure as hell is a possibility. I've seen numberious dogs become lazy afterwards, making exercising them difficult. I've also seen dogs be virtually the same afterwards. But how do you know which one you will get? Luck of the draw.
