Well, I found a kennel that holds ash in. Its only 5'x5' right now. Way better than crating him for 3 or 4 hours, running home at lunch, letting him out for 30min and then re crating him till I am off work. Gonna extend it to a 5'x10' when my paycheck finally shows up. I still feel bad leaving him alone for 8 hours.

Anyone else have to leave there dog for long periods of time? Any tips to make it less boring for him?

I am thinking about seeing if one of the neighborhood kids might come let him out for a small weekly fee.

I sometimes leave my dogs home for a day (10+ hours) but they just free roam around the house. I don't really leave toys out but from what I see on my camera's they sleep about 9 hours then walk around and shit the rest of the time.

Ya, if I were to stay home he would just sleep all day. Maybe I should set up a webcam to see if he just relaxes. Soon as I let him out he has about 5 minutes of intense energy and then goes to the couch to sleep haha.

Is it possible to walk him before you take off for the day? Mine are super hyper in the morning and then about 1 hour after they wake up and eat, they just lay around.

For cheap wireless camera's that work great check out Foscam.

I get up around 5 am to take him to a field with a chuck it and play fetch until he quits and lays down in the grass.

Maybe give him a shot without the crate and see how it goes. Sounds like he gets a lot of exercise in the morning!

Yeah, granted mine is only 4 months old but when I open the door she flips and starts crying for a good minute or two. Then she is my shadow for the next 20 minutes.

Do short periods of time. I still crate Archer, he actually does pretty well in there, but I want to be able to let him roam the house for when I'm gone for longer days.
I've been working him into being "home alone" and he's been doing well, up to an hour alone now and nothing chewed. Does make you nervous though, he's ripped boards off the fence in the back yard so I always imagine coming home to shredded drywall.

    Some amazing dogs here . . .

Argh, just tonight on the local news, there was one story about some lowlife that pulled in to these rural Wichita folks' driveway and just shot their dog twice. Had to be put down.

Then, another story about a rescue pitbull that's now being trained as a therapy dog that, get this, someone cut off one of his ears. Completely cut off one of his ears.

This was followed by a story where they finally caught the lowlife that was setting baby chicks on fire and running over them in a local school parking lot a while back.

Thank god for dogs and dog lovers!

After having a Husky for 13 years be home alone and be perfectly fine, I am going through quite a different scenario with my new 1 year old Choco Lab. He has quite the energy. I have been crating him while I am away at work, but I'd like to teach him to be good and roam the house eventually, without having to worry about accidents or damage.
I found an interesting article that seems to make a lot of sense. I may give it a shot, and see. May take a long time, but even if it takes a year, it will be worth it. Key words in the article - "Be Patient"
