Went camping in Idyllwild yesterday and hiked to the top of Tahquitz Peak first thing this morning. These 2 dumbasses decided that running around in circles and chasing each other all the way to the top through the entire 4.8 mile hike up the mountain was the best idea ever. By the time we got down to the truck it was hot as hell and they were feeling it more then I did... I think Dre dog will be sufficiently tired for the next couple of days.

If I could get Sadie to hold for the shot, and the bird to hit the ground, I'd have a Field Trial Champion on my hands. Guess I didn't get the right training early enough. I'll keep trying, though.

Good luck! Just started platform training a week ago (place board) for the pup. Going to train for sit on scent, flush on command then sit again through flush and shot. But the hunter part of me would be happy with just sit to flush.

Sit to flush? What does that mean? I don't understand. Literally, you want the dog to sit? I have seen pointing labs, but they didn't sit.

I assume he means that he will flush himself? Not sure about the sitting part, but mine was trained to point, then I got and flush, then I shoot, and the shot means the dog needs to go and retrieve. Unfortunately mine is not much of a hunter. He is more excited about chasing other dogs that look for birds. heh

Hey Don In a perfect world, a double hup
Dog locks in on scent and once he is sure that there is a bird hups (sits). You move in and when your ready release the dog- command flush it up, and it rushes in and flushes the bird. As soon as the bird flushes he sits once again and marks the fall of the bird. Well hopefully I hit it and he has a mark to retrieve :)

Right now he does pause on scent and locks up standing very much like he is on point. A pointing Toller LOL? But then after a few seconds pounces forward and rushes in. My next step is to basically whoa him and then have him sit at scent. Sort of torn about the first hup at scent or sight because so many wild birds are runners now days. I would prefer him to move and pin the bird down if it runs (Springers excel at that with phez) and wait for me to get there. Very much like the debate for pointers to self relocate on runners, which is also my preference.
