That's not a bad idea, I'm just not sure it's something I could do personally. I'll look into them and see.

Read up on how to be alpha. Your dog doesn't respect you cuz it thinks it is alpha. Also this happens to free range dogs that have constant food in their bowls. A scheduled feeding time is best. If that doesn't work put the fear of God in em or call a trainer.

Thought provoking. He's a rescue so I wasn't there during the all important early bonding process. He was 7 months when I met him. In fact, I'm the third owner. We had some issues at first but he's coming around. Aside from eating random, disgusting things, (which he may grow out of) he's a pretty good little dude.

I know it's more annoying then a problem, I'd just hate to see him get into something bad that could hurt him.

I open feed my boxer and he doesnt do that at all. Never bothers to pick stuff up in his mouth. From my experience previous dogs with scheduled feeding tended to try to eat stuff off the ground more. But each dog is different

My dog used to eat rabbit poop in the yard. His old food was small and dark so he probably thought "Hey, look dad put food outside for whenever I get hungry while I'm pooping!!" He also used to try and eat cigarette butts. He might have ingested one or two but for the most part walking with him and attacking his face after he picked one up he finally put two and two together haha.

He was under 2 whenever this happened, so maybe he's just growing out of it.

"Fear of God" is not a good choice. The dog will cower.
    Quality training is the answer.
My 20 month old Lab is an Alpha female. She used to eat anything. And chew any toy to shreads. Even had aggression issues with my wife.
She has had pro training and I continue to train her daily.
She goes back for 3 months of more pro retriever training in January.
She is settled. She is sharp on commands.
She doesn't even want toys for the most part.
    Proper training matures the dog.

Fear of God doesn't mean beat them or hurt them. Means make yourself godlike. A Regular pack member would never eat an alphas food or before an alpha. They know better. Meaning food off the table or your plate. If pack members get out of line they get disciplined. Doesn't mean alpha beats the day lights out if them just makes it something they don't want to do any more. But yes if it's something you can't handle after reading up it I'd get a pro for sure.

"The vacuum of death" makes me laugh because when I vacuum I have to lock up my German Shepard or he'll full on attack it. And sometimes even breaking it lol. The big one does look nervous haha
