I feel the same way about my Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. Incredibly loyal, and very protective. Unless you have a stick, or a ball, or a steak, or.......

I'm not placing my dog in the bed in the open. That would be wreckless. I've spoken with vets and our humane society before I even bought our dog and specifically asked about truck transportation. A proper enclosure, be it a cap or a secured crate seems equally safe and given he has proper breaks to walk around as we drive somewhere, if far enough. So far he's been very enthusiastic about our rides to our trails in our current setup, but I was more inquiring if others had more ingenious ways to transport w/o a cap also to hear how long some drives have been as we haven't gone to our camp site together yet and it will require moments on the highway. Roshak rides covered and weather protected... just can always look for better methods.

We also keep our rear window open so we can talk with him and our kids sit in the back seat, so we can hear him if he needs anything and also talk to him. I may ultimately end up with a cap, but haven't warmed up to their look yet.

Just wanted to post this in case your thoughts were that he was riding in the bare back open.

My cottage is in my home town, which is a 15 and a half hour drive from where I live and work. I'm fortunate in that I can take some pretty big chunks of time off that make it worth driving out there. We load up the dogs and make tracks. Usually drive 10 hours the first day. The final 5 the next. Coming home, we gain an hour, and with the long daylight hours, we usually do the trip in one day. All of our dogs our awesome road trippers. They usually just sleep. The Tacoma has pretty short legs, so every 3 hours or so, we stop for gas and a stretch. Some nice rest areas along the way for the dogs as well to sniff around and roll in the grass.

If you haven't tried it, I'd suggest a couple of short trips. Go a little bit longer each time. Take them someplace where they can run, play, and have some fun. You know, be dogs. You can take them around the city running errands with you. Something where they have to be in the truck for 2 or 3 hours. When you get home, play play play, or go for a walk so they know there's something exciting at the end of that ride. Test them out. I'm sure they'll be fine and end up looking forward to jumping in the truck and going for a ride. For my guys and girls, I think they look at an open truck door as the beginning of an adventure.

Cool. I grew up in Winnipeg/Steinbach. We used to go camping in the Whiteshell/West Hawk Lake and Lake of the Woods / Rushing River area.

Cool! I flew into Steinback South when I was working on my commercial license. Or was it North? Whichever one has the golf course off the south end of the runway.

Couple of pictures of my girls at Rushing River. Hot September day just before we left to come back to Calgary.

From what I vaguely remember the golf course was north of the town (that was in the early 80's).

    Nice pups!!

I know I guy that rides around with dogs on a flat bed. They never fall off or jump off unless he tells them too. He never travels far though.

    Everything TW members recommend
Same with our Dobie. She refuses to let us out of her line of sight. We can go outside and let her loose. She will NOT go anywhere unless we are within sight. I can work in the garage for hours with an open garage door. She will stay inside the garage, never venture out, unless I step OUT of the garage. Then she'll go about her business chasing squirrels and such. I actually have to make a point of stepping out of the garage frequently so she can go run around and have fun. Otherwise, she'll just hang around me inside the garage with that "I'm bored" look.
