yea it took me about 8 months to get my GF fully on board. she got tired of hearing me correct her for not doing what i do. the family on the other hand has been a whole different beast. mom just wants to give her cheerios and my sister and brother in law have the "Bumpus hounds" from A Christmas Story (crazy, rowdy, loud, does whatever the fuck the want). luckily dad is just indifferent to dogs so he just ignores her most of the time which is what i wish everyone else would do too. good luck bud! we're in the same boat!

I would have to say that we have different opinions as to what a "finished" dog is. There has to be a grading scale of some sort and I'd base it off whether or not the dog could obtain a master hunter title at a minimum. Again, if you reached your goals with your dog then I totally get it. My dog is nowhere near where I need her to be to reach the finished criteria. I'd say she could pass a seasoned hunter hunt test as of now. You have sparked my curiousity though, gonna research and see if any dogs have obtained a master hunter title as of recent without using an e collar. You're spot on about them being used as punishment rather than training. A collar in the wrong hands will ruin a dog

I think that's just disrespectful of your friends. Put them in their place. Lol. I have a hard time with my kids around when training but it makes for good distractions. It will get better

That's fair. The testing world is quite different than the hunting world. There are some overlaps, you need the dogs to quarter, point, etc. But no level of training on purchased game birds can prepare a dog for wild birds. I did that whole testing stuff for a few years and got turned off by it. Now I just train for hunting....with many of the goals being the same.

I know many, many, people that have great quail & chukar dogs...but those dog's couldn't point a ruffed grouse if it was 4' in front of them!

I'd love to able to get my GSP on those birds. Just a bit difficult living in the SF Bay area. I hardly get the time to get her on wild pheasant, much less ruffled grouse.

I imagine there aren't too many in those parts.

They're just plain awesome to hunt...the most challenging game bird as far as I'm concerned. Very hard with a dog as usually the dog's pointing in cover so thick the wind won't blow!

If you happen to have an open shot...they usually will fly in a direction that puts an object (tree) between you and it!

The daily limit in Maine is 4 - I've been hunting with GSP's since 2001 and I've only got my limit twice. I don't shoot road birds and I don't shoot birds out of trees (I don't fault those that do as it's common here...but I have no need with dogs). Only pointed birds and natural flushes for this crew.

For what it's worth, I don't get into the test game either because i don't care for the folks. I found it is greatly different than hunting in a lot of areas. Cool to watch, just not the same.

I just want a stellar hunting dog.

My dogs are most definitely master hunters. They hunt bad guys. Big dog has passed away, and changing of the guard has started. Chainsaw with teeth baby!!!

That's awesome. When our Weim passes we will be shopping for a Shepard for protection purpose. I want a Malanois but I'm told they are like baby velociraptors

My cousin got a Mal after his 2nd tour in Iraq. He said the reason he chose a Mal was because he was around both GSDs and Mals on the same patrols and the Mals kept working after the GSDs quit.

So basically baby velociraptor is pretty accurate.
