Hey Rab have you ever thought of a rescue? An older dog that doesn't need house training or a little bit of adjustment might be a better selection. (Google Boxer rescue for your area) If you want a pup then google Boxer dogs and that should help narrow it down for you. You can also go to Pet Smart (if you have one) and pick up a copy of Dog World! It will have alot of breeders in it for you to peruse. Rec the breeder route as the quality and your getting a healthy puppy are much better. Do not go to a pet store and buy one. You may find yourself saddled with vet bills after the purchase. It can be very expensive. This is why rescue org's ususally charge a fee for adoption because of the medical the dogs go thru. This usually includes spaying as well. My Cairn's (Toto from the Wizard of Oz) is a rescue courtesy of the Missouri State Police. They raided a puppy mill, and my little $250 diamond is worth every penny of her little black face. Give it some it some thought and some thought on how you will have to take care of an animal for the rest of its life....

I got Bruce one of my boxers from the boxer rescue. I got my oldest dog Zu from the dog pound, she was in the litter of 7, it was hard not adopting all 7. You may want to check your local pound, along with the rescue. These dogs are a handful, so some people are just unable to take care of them and give them up. I like to call these people losers.

LMAO!! I personally don't find our boxer a handful. I think he's a little more work than other dogs, as is any bully breed. But with love, devotion and rules he is a great dog. People don't research the breed they are getting. "Oh cool my friends got one of those, I want one!" They don't realize the time and effort their friend put into raising the puppy thats now a good dog. We do mostly positive reinforcement but found if he gets out of hand, a time out works great. He's a social dog, so getting locked in the bathroom for 30 secs gives him a big attitude adjustment. Any where we are, if he gets "crazy" we just keep removing him from the situation until he calms down. Mostly its with jumping on people, which is getting better. He loves people and just wants to show them, but we don't want any injuries. :D

I don't know if your trying to preach to me or what, but I have already contacted the boxer rescue in my area, but I want to raise a dog from a puppy. I would NEVER buy a dog from a place like pet smart, but I would buy from a reputable breeder, I was asking where because my sister get her boxer from NJ shipped to her here in Canada.

I have been researching dog's and breed's for years, and I think a Boxer fits my personality pretty well, I was interested in a GSD too, but I am more interested in a boxer as they are very FUN!

but it's not set in stone, we'll see when I get back what I want to get.

Hey easy now. I hope rme speaks for himself, but if you look around it has nothing to do with preaching. He is very much about the dogs and I am sure just wanted to make sure you are well informed. Once you have a Boxer hopefully u won't understand why people can give them up so easily, but they do. And before you ship a dog, try to look into picking him up yourself. I thought my wife was nuts for wanting our boxer from over 4 hours away. But it turned out to be a fun adventure and a great memory. AND he was well worth it!! I know you are way more than 4 hrs from NJ, but its just a suggestion.

Sorry Rab didn't mean to sound preachy...just wasn't sure if you had thought of all the options. Sorry if this came off wrong. (Maybe it's the 7 rescues I've had in my life that makes me that way.) By the way I had one Boxer rescue from Germany (Picked him up on my way for R&R from Bosnia) and I have currently have another Boxer rescue from Georgia. Great dogs and it looks like you have done your research quite well. Other breeds are great too. My preference is the Boxer for a family dog. They are of medium size and can take the abuse little people (kids) heep on them and keep on loving them. I like they are short hair as that seems to keep the shedding to a minimum. My first boxer would sit and let me use the vacuum hose to get her lose hair off of her. God I miss that little angel. Boxers are also what I call neighbor safe. Meaning I've never had to worry about any of my boxers biting someone. They just don't mind out of anger. BUT they will play hard and be rough and tumbly if that's what you want. Still I have no fear of inviting someone in and there getting dog bit. So I do favor the breed a little more than others. On the down side (if you call it that) they don't train up as fast as the GSD. My first boxer I had in Germany and trained and certified her there. She was a hoot. After the training session all of us (Germans and me the one american) would go in the gasthaus and drink beer and eat. She was a little jewel in those situations. But she did like to sit in my lap even when driving. I like Boxers with their ears cut but I think Oldmantaco(?) is just the opposite. My german boxer was floppy eared but who cares it's the disposition that I love. Hard in some respects to train and not so much in others. I was willing to trade that off for other breeds I wanted. Again the GSD is a very easily trainable companion. They are also extremely loyal and would probably make an excellent family dog as is the boxer. I've never had a GSD though. Not sure if your familiar with the difference in a pedigree and an AKC registration but when you decide to buy request to look at the pedigree of the sire and the dam. It will give you alot of good info on breeding and health. In case you didn't know the "BOXER" is the only dog to have it's genes completely mapped by science so as to look at development of diseases within the dog world. Quite a feat in my opinion to be picked for this very very expensive project and to use it as the basis for all other dogs and problems they may encounter. If there is anything I can do to help guide you or any questions you might want to ask please post them or email me. The good lord knows I ask alot of questions of other breeds and don't know nearly as much as I should. Keep this thread posted on what you do then post pics...it's great to see kids (dogs) from all the families here. By the way I consider Tank (on this blog) to be a friend of mine if you can find him and I believe alot of us are watching him grow up....

Sorry rme if I stepped on your toes by answering for you, i just know from our talks on here that you didn't mean any offense.

I disagree with a few points that you made. Boxers can be EXTREMELY territorial and defend their home, IF they aren't properly socialized and bad behavior isn't corrected. Our boxer went hay wire when I walked in our door with a baseball hat on. I wasn't afraid of getting bit or anything, but it seemed like he wasn't going to let me any further in the house. Took the hat off, and he immediately realized. I tried helmets, hoodies, and just forgot about a baseball hat. He was ready to defend. He was that way with a lot of people when he was younger, but through training he has stopped. My point is that he needs to make sure to socialize him right, with people that are tall, short, black, white, beards and fros, etc.... And with as many positive dogs as he can too.

I am not fond of GSD because of their tendency to snap. They can just go off. They are good dogs overall but just not the breed for me. We have a friend with one and the dogs were playing and wrestling and she decided she had enough and bit Polar. I watched the whole thing, he did nothing any different. Some of it I blame on her raising and the lack of tolerance she has, spoiled the bad way. But I have since found that this is the way they can react when mad. Having a dog can be unpredictable enough, without having that extra trait to deal with.

Just my $.02. Oh and I forgot to say that I love my boxer, with his floppy ears. ;)

Thanks OLDMANTAN....LMAO...for filling in the blanks for me. I should have started out by saying proper socialization is the key to any dog but especially the boxer to get them in the loving mode.....You are absolutely correct they will defend and deny entry into their territory (basic wolf instinct) to strangers. But it's been my experience you almost have to make a boxer bite you and then they will think about it before acting. Is this your experience? I've had three of these wonderful companions in my lifetime and my boys have three boxers between them. I know when I walk in the house it's like ...its just you...again. But they may be reading the body language of my boys and their family.

Boxers are lovers and when they aren't lovers they're bed pigs (at least mine is...LOL)

Oops should have said I agree with you about socialization of our boxers....not your are absolutely correct...(even though you are in)

Yeah she is! She is loving the water. She gets a little nervous when it gets deeper than she can stand in, but she is learning. I cant wait till it warms up enough so we can take her on the boat. :)
