I've been fortunate enough to have not experienced that. I've heard that the skunk odor remover is the only thing that works.

My old black lab Bristol once rubbed herself into a dead skunk. It was god-awful. We were out in the fields and she was running around. I saw her on her back rubbing her back and diving her head into something, went to look what she was up to.

It was awful, I had the lifted Tundra and she was too old to jump onto the tailgate. I had to pick her up and put her in the bed so the stench was transferred to my sweatshirt. We were five miles from home and 18 miles from a Pets-r-Us to get skunk shampoo. I took her home, put her in the backyard, closed the dogdoor, went and got the skunk shampoo. I had indoor/outdoor carpet in the bed, that had to be trashed. The carpet headliner on the shell held the stench for a little while, but a good febreeze soaking saved it. That was a hell-raising dog, and I'm a big fan of leather seats because the mutts don't transfer their hair and various stenches to my seats.

Must be a dog right of passage. That sounds pretty intense!

That dog was a hell-raiser. She loved going out at night chasing coyotes. Probably figured the skunk scent would give her an advantage against the coyotes. That dog had a zest for life.

She passed on last year but trained this New Mexico rescue lab. New Mexico dog probably knew about coyotes, but Bristol would jump out of the trailer at dusk, look back to get Millie out then they would be gone half the night. I'll have to get Millie a companion.

    Home made skunk stench cleaner:
    • quart bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide
    • cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
    • a tablespoon or two of Dawn concentrated dish detergent
mix, it immediately starts foaming, spread it all over the dog, rubbing it into their fur. keep it out of the eyes, but you can apply it to their nose, forehead, cheeks, etc. rinse out, dry dog. voila, skunk smell neutralized by the chemical reaction of the free oxygen radicals that the bicarbonate pulls from the peroxide. the soap is so it wets the hair. also useful on carpets or most anything else the dog has brushed against. for carpets, spread it on, brush it in with a stiff hand brush, then use a wet-dry vac to remove, rinse, repeat vac.

how do I know this? we had a skunk hound once upon a time. Blake, a yellow 'generic' mutt (shepherd/coyote shaped), LOVED to chase skunks, even killed a couple. didn't bother him in the least unless he got sprayed in the eyes. and the California central coast where we live is Skunk Central. We always keep a box of baking soda, and a couple quarts of peroxide around. thankfully our current lab has only gotten lightly sprayed once, she stands her ground and WOOFS! at intruders, but doesn't give chase, except maybe to deer and not very long or hard.

Anybody else have a dog that likes to hang out the window like this? I need like a flip window pad to protect from her nails scratching paint.

If it were me, I'd probably keep the window rolled up about 70 percent of the way so she can just get her head out. Wouldn't take much for her to fall out. Beautiful dog.

I tried that, turned the black lab peroxide rust. That's ok, no big deal, but I had to get the skunk shampoo to finally get the stench out.

New Mexico dog was barking down in a canyon just now, I walk out to see what is going on, she's faced off with a bull. Bull is trying to gore her protecting two cows. I'm glad I wasn't wearing a red hoodie. I didn't get too close, retreated to my sissy trailer and let the dog handle it.

Dog had the bull's attention so I backed off and retreated, I don't know what I would have done if the bull charged. Don't want any part of that.

My pup would hang out like that if I let him. He "yells" at me and paws at the window if I dont open it for him. It terrified me the first time when he was hanging out with almost 1/2 his body thinking he would jump/fall out (he was still a clumsy puppy). I made a custom lead so he can get his head and a little more out the window but not even 1/2 his body. a week or 2 after I made it he did try to jump out when I pulled up to my buddys place. Ended up hanging by the lead attached to his harness and his front legs still in the cab because I miss judged the lead length and left it about 2" too long. It was shortened that day and he hasnt tried to jump since. I do go ahead and shut the windows when I pull onto my buddys street before my pup gets to excited to play with his friends.

My boxer and sheltie both came back to the house DRIPPING from being sprayed. 1130 at night. I was not impressed to say the least. Mixed up the home skunk remover spray and washed SEVERAL times before they were put in their kennels for the night. Seemed to have learned that those "kittys" aren't to be played with. Now porcupines on the other hand! UGH! Boxer would get hit EVERY time one was near the house. Lost count at 263 quills the one time. Dog pen, fenced in area solved that problem to this day. T/G.

Haven't posted here in a long while. Y'all know Ash, probably have seen Stevie (the weenie), but haven't seen our two newest additions. We inherited these two goofballs and now have a dog pack.

We had a few scuffles at the start with Ash and Sam (both males). These photos are from our hike this weekend.

Been years since I've cut any of my Toller nails. Long paver brick driveway and I throw several hours a day for the dog. My guy that has since passed over the rainbow bridge I never cut his nails, ever. Had a vet tell me once that I was cutting his nails too short and said I've never cut them. He gave me a doubtful look. I found a new vet, he was a city boy anyhow and didn't have a clue about hunting.

Hard to hunt SD for pheasants without getting skunked. One reason I own a pickup again instead of a SUV. Throw a skunked dog in a SUV with you on the way to see Barb the Skunk Lady and you can have everyone else puking in minutes. And if the smell of the skunk doesn't get to you that will.

I've known quilled dogs to die later, hard to get them all. Buried ones can work there way to the heart, brain or other organs. Largest porky I've ever seen:

Didn't stay treed long and when he came down the Toller started going after it. Stood on the ecollar and the dog still wanted to chase him, came close, way too close. I don't shoot pictures of them anymore when the dog is with me. But I do shoot porkies once the dog is moved out of the way and then put the carcass high in a tree fork so another dog doesn't get quilled. Carry all the gear to do the pulling but like gear for cutting snares and Conibear traps hope never have to use any of it.
