That was an issue I was running into as well when looking for a friend which is why local place was the way to go.

you can always twin stick it in lieu of a factory shifter.

Just sucks. It’s basically a linear move from the Tacoma tcase in my mind and just a time and money suck. Was really hoping someone has tricked the factory tcase after a SAS haha

I thought I read on here that the 3rd gen 4Runner or 1st gen Tacoma Tcase shifters work in the FJ case as well.

Man it ain’t that serious lmao you’re spending how many thousands of dollars on a sas and this is a point of annoyance?

You could spin it into an (expensive) positive and do a northwest fab crawl box at the same time. Use the planetary gears from your stock case for the northwest box and put an fj case behind that.

I’m about 18k into it after a couple months. About 3k left to go. I’m a very budget oriented person so I don’t like to be blindsided regardless of the amount. My own fault for not researching it, just never crossed my mind. I also don’t want to invest more into the shitty tacoma drivetrain than I have to. I want parts that would switch to a buggy/bouncer chassis in the future and if I ever got a wild hair to throw something in the taco first it’d better be an LS/TH400/Atlas.

So you’re thinking bypass any of the 4wd computer and just take control of the tcase actuator directly? I don’t care about dash lights, but do need some sort of indication of hi/lo I guess. I need to study what the actuator does inside the tcase and get a better understanding. I’d appreciate any more input you can add.

this was my reply to Pdugan when he was asking

option 1, gets rid off all the stupid electronics that can fail.
option 2, is the easiest and cheapest, but you have electronics that can fail.

    now another option
option 3, do what @6 gearT444E said and figure a way out and still have electronics that can fail.

yes just unplug it and tie dash lights to the cluster directly. Wire up a relay to reverse polarity between these two connections and jog them until you get the dash indicator lights.

I sold my actuator, but that’s no problem to buy another of course. You’re saying just plug it in, zip tie it up somewhere and everything will function as before?

yep. the hsift arm will move into its position and everything will be happy.

just make sure its out of the way and doesnt hit anything

When wyatt from RST first SASd his Tacoma before putting the fj case in, that's what he did

Well damn that’s definitely what I’ll do. I didn’t realize that’s all that was needed to make it continue to work haha

you could probably get a cheap one from someone who converted to an FJ case, and were in the right thread to know that population of people haha

I was too excited and just bought a cheapo on eBay haha I’ll probably strip it down and build a little waterproof box for it if I’m feeling fancy. I don’t think there are any position sensors or checks so to speak in there that would require keeping the entire assembly.

the problem is the electronics are all on the back cover and the wiper arm is connected to the rest of the housing you’ll need to keep it in tact.

Is it something that could stay exposed you think? Never taken one off before. I’m guessing the electronics are sealed from the arm since it’d be in gear oil.

I would leave the whole unit tied up and rig some kind of bag around the shift fork. There is a seal there that keeps the gear oil from going into the motor housing, but leaving that area exposed to the elements could cause the shift fork shaft to seize up if dirt or grime gets in there.

On the opposite side of the electronics box is the fork itself

U could cut the shift fork down. It shouldn’t matter if it’s there or not.
