got an FJ tcase but thing is a bitch to move and store

how hard are these to find? Is it better to just keep it rather than offload need to find again later

want to reduce messing with the truck but it really should have a manual stick and ADD failure is expensive and unpredictable

having flashbacks to finding things in junkyard for another part. Wrong part, half the shit missing, “mechanic” with a hammer looking to pull a valve cover for you by sawzalling it in half
Driving far to yards walking around them all day for 50/50 hit or miss
Probably hang onto it for that reason

 

Carry it around in your rooftop box?

 

I’ll see if it fits in a big strong bucket that would be convenient. Throw any bolts that I suspect may have come from it in there with it, label and close the lid

leave it for another day figure everything else out like acquire ADD delete tube parts, twin stick, etc

 

Keep it unless you don't plan on doing the swap. Prices are only going up

 

If this is truly a mod you want to do, it'd be kinda silly to sell it now that you have it. You've got the one of the bigger obstacles out of the way with it in your possession. Keep collecting the rest of the little shit you need. The small harbor freight furniture dollies work well for moving it around the shop floor.

If you don't have a trans jack, I'd recommend you invest in one. I used the white / orange pittsburgh scissor jack from HF the first time around, but it was definitely a challenge to get the the case perfectly aligned and sitting properly. I was trying to balance it on scraps of wood and large sockets, and it'd slip as soon as I got it aligned. I'd encourage you to spend the few extra bucks on the gray, hydraulic trans jack, which has some tilt adjustment. They go on sale for $180 regularly.

surprised that was needed and not possible other way by hand, to just benchpress it in there or something and rotate as needed, like off the center with bolts slightly loose all around.

 

I also used that thing, one of the sketchiest experiences of my life good god.

 

I just bench press it on or off. Sure a trans jack would make life easier but I've lived without one so far lol

 

I removed my stock tcase and test fitted my crawl box the old fashioned way, and bought the scissor jack for the final install after deciding my face was too pretty to smash. Yea, it absolutely can be done benchpressing, but its one of those things where having the right tools makes the job go a lot smoother.

More of whatever body part works, like support with legs if that works better
but yes like you said would not be good for it to fall on face, thing is big and heavy.
And from what it sounds like more sensitive to getting the right angle than stabbing a trans back in that simply has to line up with the bolts and through the clutch.

 

Imo stabbing the case is easier than the trans....but then again I've gone up and down with case more in 2 days than I have with the trans during entire ownership.

 

I found the culprit of the smell, the black rtv had a hole in it from where I sealed up the shifter coming through the boot. Got high temp heat and made sure it was covered hopefully that takes care of the gear oil smell!!

 

Anyone done this on a 2wd 3rd gen?? I already have an AC60F trans but going with 1ton axles instead of the stock front setup. All I would need is the FJ tcase and then wire it up correct?

 

Anyone know the torque specs for the 12 mm bolts from t case to trans?

 

18 ft lbs. I just snug em up

Fj transfer case does not require wiring to work. The case has 3 switches(those are the 6 wires coming out of it, 2 for 4h switch, 2 for N switch and 2 for 4L switch) that connect path to ground for the 4x4 ecu to do his thing and for the lights on the dash.

Yeah I still can't get the damn gear oil smell out. I'm going to have to sacrifice a Saturday and tear everything out and start again. Flex tape and rtv but it's still coming through. Not sure if I spilled some somewhere like it's just sitting somewhere I can't see lol
