Need a way to secure the boot

 

cant take the wire out of the stock boot to put in new boot?

 

I ended up enlarging the opening so I lost the snap in points for the wire. It's a good thought though. I think the boot would have been pretty scrunched up if i did that.

 

i used the wire in mine. but the second shifter for mine is for a crawl box. it just moves up and down and has no side to side like the FJ tcase so i didnt have to open mine up and was able to reuse the wire. mines not really scrunched up tho.

 

Question on sensors...

Swapping cases on a 2007 regular cab. The stock t case has two detent sensors on the shift mechanism. The fj case I'm swapping in has three. Two are on drivers side, and one on drivers side. Which ones go where and do I just leave one unplugged?

On speedometer sensor...
My truck has the sensor on the case. I was a little um, ham fisted taking the sensor off. Is there a specific sensor I can order to attach to the fj case? It looks like it has a provision for a sensor? Orrrr am I stuck ordering another rear output cover for my truck and swapping it on? I currently have 4.88 gears and 37's, so it may be a good opportunity to get a more "correct" speedo gear anyway. I'm about 6" off at highway speeds.

for the tcase sensors, you will replace 2 of the 3 with the 2 from the stock tcase. one left one right. dunno which ones are which tho. leave the 3rd one on the fj case where it is tho. it keeps oil from spewing out

 

The speed sensor does not come with a gear. Or at least mine didnt. You need to swap over the gear from your broken one. If i still have it, I think there's a brand new 5 year old AC Delco sensor laying around my garage I can send you. I thought mine was bad so I bought a new one but it turned out to be a bad harness. I'll check when I get home tonight.

I lied its beck / arnley but at least I remembered the box was blue. I installed this briefly but when my speedo wasn't fixed by the new sensor, I traced my issue to the harness and put the original sensor back in. I'll give you a good deal on it if your interested.

Question for those of you who have pulled the back of the TCase off, I have a leak on that back end on my transfer case. Can I pull the back end off with it still mounted to the truck, or do I need to drop it? any other tips or things I need to know?

I think you need to pull the entire case. Pulling the case isn't too hard. Lots of videos / tips available on how to do it.

For example hypothetically in Mexico how would you swing the truck around?

Don’t get me wrong I could easily drift my truck stock any which way on 31’s

but on grippy 35’s it doesn’t seem as excited to be doing that any more
I imagine 2Lo could do that but is not practical because you have to stop, change gears, stop again, change again

Yeah that's no problem, I have swapped transmissions and transfer cases before. I was just hoping to pop the back off and reseal it lol. I have a couple spare cases so I can just swap it and work on it on my bench.

 

There was a dude on here recently that pulled the rear half of the case with it still in the truck. Not the way I would do it, but to each their own.

 

2lo is also good for cruising on the trail and free up steering when 4x4 isn’t needed.

why on earth would you want to do donuts and burnouts in 2lo haha you’ll need the wheels speed. Trial and error, pal. Go send it

 

Can't recall if we talked about this previously...is your truck a manual or an auto? If manual you'll need to swap inputs from your Taco case to FJ case while your twin sticking.

Either way, the Taco case in your truck or the busted one are fine for a donor, except you'll need to order, at a minimum, these two parts separately:

Transfer Gear Shift Fork No. 2 36312-35040

Transfer Low Planetary Gear Spline 36284-35021

There was a decent thread on the steps to twin stick, but I must have found it on another toyota site as i cant find it here. Check out my build thread around Sept 2019 I cover most of the steps for twin stick and can fill in any details youre missing. You have to remove a little metal pill from where the detent spring is, and grind the shift rail on the vertical and horizontal axis to remove the nubs.

Question for everyone: I've got the swap "complete ". It has now developed the bad habit of kicking out of high range while deceleration. So I have it temporarily tied back. Also, I put it in 4wd and it floated itself back to 2wd, no noises. What am I missing?

Also, for those in need. The twin stick boot for a flat fender Jeep will work in a pinch as an FYI.

 

might need a stiffer shift spring. you can get them from marlincrawler.

 

I'll check it out. When I had it apart I removed that ball bearing and small spring. Should I have left that spring in? This was a drawn out project so I could have easily forgotten something.

 

yes. the spring and ball bearing need to be there. its what keeps the shifters from moving. sometimes the springs are enough tho and need a more HD one. i had my pop out from low to neutral while going downhill on a trail and it scared the fuck out of me and my passenger. he ended up holding it down in low while i was steering and shifting the transmission as needed
