I'd drive it around for a bit, see if it changes at all. Could it be residual oil from the swap? Are you sure it's not the tcase leaking from the input shaft flange? It might be obvious to most - but I used the input shaft flange from the fj tcase and it leaked... So I had to pull the tcase to swap the flange.
If it makes you feel any better I've pulled my tcase four times in the last two months :frusty:

It’s possible but it didn’t have the pungent gear oil smell. I had to swap that output shaft since I’m a manual so everything is fresh and sealed. We’ll see though. I’ll give it a week and drop it and see what’s up.

    Output shaft!?

I thought it was the input shaft that needed swapped around for the 6 speeds?

Also, I’m hoping this works, it came in today. The FJ MT shifter.

How difficult was it to do this? Did you sew the wire piece into the new one or just zip tie it?

It was a bit time consuming. I pulled the old wire out of the stock shift boot and the FJ boot and had the taco wire sewn into the FJ boot. My mom can sew, so i had her help me with it. She mentioned that the center seam had to be removed and sewn back up to get the back section of the boot to fit and look good. If you notice when you remove the stock tacoma wire piece, the section at the back is narrower.

That's good info, thanks. As much as it pains me to spend $100 on an FJ boot, 1/3 the price of the t case, I don't know if I'll be happy with anything less. I love the finished product.

I agree, you've gone this far, the FJ boot really cleans things up. 100% worth the extra cost

    I’d say she’s ready.

EDIT: of course I’ll stake those nuts

Total newbie with mechanic things here, I am getting ready to split my FJ t-case this weekend.

Can you tell me what the red gasket maker is that you use to put the case back together?

And what is the blue marking on the nut to be staked? I believe I know what it is for, what is it called?

I just used permatex gasket maker from autozone

And the nuts that get staked are for the output flanges. There’s a spot where they thread on to stake them after you’ve torqued them. I think it’s 87ft/lbs for those two. See the pic

I don’t know if the blue mark is called anything specifically

I think the blue marks indicate it was torqued from the factory

It's called cross check (one brand anyway), used to verify items were torqued and not messed with or have come loose at the factory, probably for the QC guys. You can buy it and add some for the peace of mind if you wanted to.

How many miles did the fj case have? Did it look in good condition when you received it?
