I hear ya. I had this trip planned a couple years ago when I got my Drifter but everything was on lock down due to Covid so it didn't make any sense to finish the loop I planned. Now I'll just have to eat the gas cost cause I want to get this trip in before my son graduates high school and gets too busy with working/internship and college. The added benefit is now he can help drive so my ass can rest.

I have almost EXACTLY the same situation! We were going to go out West to Carlsbad, NM a couple years ago, but Covid.... Now, my kid is 18 and going to be starting college in the Fall so this trip is happening come hell or high gas prices!

This time we are going to add a visit to the Grand Canyon and hit Moab before heading back. It's a pretty good-sized loop and I calculated it at over 3800 miles round-trip.

Icing on the cake will be picking up our truck topper in Prescott during the trip. Can't wait!

    I know...not a second-gen, but the similarities are striking.

30 or so miles from the house, rare to see anyone for hours out there if at all. I'll deal with the higher gas prices ( I also have a Prius ) BLM land for shooting is 9 miles or so away

While going through NM, I’d highly suggest a quick stop at White Sands. Very different area. I don’t think you would regret it.
Also the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is much more impressive, IMO, if you can get there. The drive from Zion to Bryce to Grand Escalante to Capitol Reef to Moab is AWESOME! Your son will always remember these places.
Enjoy your tour wherever you make it!

That is one of the best pics of the La Sals I've ever seen! Love that area.

When COVID came around camping in my truck was the one thing I felt like I could do. I set a goal of visiting all the national parks in the lower 48 and started hitting the road. I think there's something like 51 total and I'm now at 37. Three more next month in SoCal and a handful more in the upper midwest in August.

Is it as bad as BC, Canada right now?

    We're at $2.29/L that converts to $6.77/gallon!!!

$210 CAD to fill up the truck.

That's great! I've done about a dozen so far. I've been doing the ones close to home first(Midwest) and branching out. Let me know if you need any recommendations for the ones east of the Mississippi!

If you have any favorite hikes or other must-sees in and around these parks I'd be interested to hear about them: Cuyahoga Valley, Great Smoky Mountains, Congaree, New River Gorge, Shenandoah.

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
Ok ok ok , I kinda broke the rules. But look at these charcoal rims on the g2!!!! 3 hours to change the shocks.

Next time, mark the alignment cams with a paint pin and disconnect the LCA from the spindle/steering knuckle. The shocks will drop straight down. Your 3 hours will go to under 1 hour unless you stop to drink a lot of beer.
