Thanks for those pics! I was born east of there, between Bruneau Dunes State Park and Mountain Home, Idaho in the former B-24 training base hospital where the expectant mothers watched the sand and sagebrush blowing by through the cracks between boards. I retired to tropical north Idaho (less precipitation, less biting & flying insects than coastal AK).
Dad's old Tacoma has almost 6k more miles on it in the not-quite-a-year that I've been running, modifying, and taking care of it. This was my birthday trip attempt to revisit the first (and last trip) when we hiked with his brother to Bear Creek Overlook in 1973. I don't remember much about the drive up the FS road, and back down, but since I've been back for a decade, I noticed that the USFS (We've always identified with Norman McLean's explanation of the abbreviation.) has been saving money on maintenance of roads and trails. Few turnouts on this one and little traffic, except for meeting the grader coming down from the gated end, fortunately where a spur road began (that is not being maintained so it appears to be in better shape, where it begins) to pull into then back up , continue to the gate, turn around and park at this "Last Best Place." Great view across Bear Creek (Ravalli County, MT) of the Three Sisters, apparently renamed officially "Cathedral Peaks" Hot, dry, dusty and H4 since the grader broke off chunks of roadbed granite, leaving behind big sand holes with the granite pieces atop the sand further on. Glad I replaced the stock SR5 steel plate and braces with the All Pro Off-Road front IFS skid plate (aluminum powder coated providing more coverage at equal weight)! That company was based down below at Victor, MT until 2018, when they moved to Fresno as one of the Trail Gear companies, and likely found better help. Scattered Mom's and Dad's ashes downslope for wind and water to distribute from above their home of fifty years, raising kids, cattle, and more among good neighbors. Found a tick on the back of my hand as I was taking the last photos of the truck before heading down in H4 1st gear at 10 mph, which still raised a bit of dust. I stayed at Red Sun Labyrinth and was greeted by Jack in the mornings while he was making his rounds. Jack has broad shoulders, requiring a broad stance that reminds me of a NFL defense. Jack Tatum? BTW, St. Regis TravelStop parking was busy the next day, but not at the fudge, coffee and Huckleberry milkshake counter. It was Britney's birthday IMG_5967.jpg IMG_5967.jpg IMG_5964.jpg proclaimed on the tip jar, so we shared birthdays and all the (young) ladies at the counter wished me a happy birthday. So "The,Best,Ever!" huckleberry milkshake (always!) was very sweet.IMG_5988.jpg IMG_5962.jpg IMG_5965.jpg IMG_5972.jpg IMG_5973.jpg IMG_5977.jpg

On my way to Trapper’s Lake sort of near Meeker, CO. Fishing was excellent for cutthroats and Brookies! Largest average size for both I have ever caught!

If anyone goes, I highly suggest you book a campsite for 4-5 days minimum. It’s a long drive in from Meeker!

Looks like you fought a tree or a nice Rockies boulder. Time for a plate bumper?

    Lots of ideas here:

    https://adventuretaco.com/tripdest/owyhee/

And there's not really any hard wheeling there in my experience, so I don't know that I'd say E load tires are a requirement like Sam @toucan (though maybe he knows something I don't). I would say, however, that you should avoid the entire area like the plague if it is raining. The mud there is famously sticky and gross.

I doubt I know anything about wheeling that you don't, Im just a firm believer in E-rated tires.
That old Columbia river Basalt can be sharp.

Spent my holiday weekend off-roading and camping in the Buena Vista/ Salida area. Including finding a dog running miles from where it’s owners lost it and reuniting them. Had a fantastic time.

Least favorite thing might have been Tin Cup Pass, only because it was crazy crazy busy. More sxs than you can shake a stick at. It was super scenic anyways. having most of Aspen ridge to ourselves Sunday night was great.
