Didn't realize I'd cut the text out from the original post when I edited out the hiking photos that didn't include the truck. Oops.

Also, having driven Flint Trail five times now (three times down, twice up), and seen the ranger station's "wall of shame" photos of flipped vehicles, I really do wonder how they manage to do it. The spot where they all seem to flip isn't particularly narrow.

I wasn't trying to dis your post, many of us wouldn't recognize that area so it's mostly a plus to see where the some of pics were taken, I understand some places need to be less advertised but it's not like the sprinter crowd is going to show up out on the Flint Trail. The area is spectacular part of CLNP. We ride MCs out there and the Maze is my favorite region of Canyonlands because it's so remote. Your pics are great BTW!

Here's 3 shots I took near that same canyon, all taken from the same spot, just the zoom was changed.

The Sprinter crowd may not, but the ill-prepared are still out there. It's definitely a place where you need to plan and pack accordingly, and have a good understanding of your vehicle's fuel economy and capabilities (even though 99% of the driving is non-technical and can be done in 2WD). We actually had to skip a planned stop at Queen Anne's Bottom (27 mile round trip from the campsite in the last photo) due to fuel concerns with the third vehicle (a Jeep that was carrying 18 gallons of extra fuel).

    Encountered on this trip:
    • Through hikers out of Needles who ran out of water. (Luckily we had plenty to spare.)
    • Rental (?) hybrid Jeep without extra fuel. (A ranger apparently turned him around.)
    • Tundra and Jeep asking if we had fuel to spare. (We did not, and advised them to not go to their planned destination based on their fuel situation.)
    • Stock GX who turned around on seeing an obstacle, knowing he could get down it but was unlikely to get back up. (Told him that I knew exactly which obstacle it was and that he probably made the right choice.)
All that being said, if you have the opportunity: Go. It's amazing, especially if you like hiking. Just get your permits in order, prepare accordingly, pack everything out, and stay off the crust.

I've talked to the rangers out there, their position is "be prepared to self rescue" We take any ride out there seriously, I also pay $50 a year for a Utah SAR card.

I’m really impressed with the zoom on the new iPhones. These last two photos were taken from the same spot.

North of Johnsondale or South? Those storms last year really changed the contour and access spots of the Kern.

South of it closer towards lake isabella.

Was camping with a local, he said the storm washed out that campsite a few years ago.
