I’m just glad that I learned that EVs aren’t perfect. Phew. I’ll keep that in mind next time we fuck up Louisiana with an oil spill.

Yeah that oil could be used to run the power for the charging stations instead. Damn storms ruining the planet.

Anyway, as a first foray into battery powered systems, I’m looking at building a battery pack for home stuff. There’s been a lot of weird shit going on the last year or so and I figure a couple hundred watts of solar panel and a suitcase full of batteries might be enough to keep things sane around here without relying on trips to the gas station.

These seem like a nice option:

Still looking at inverters and chargers though. I have enough dc powered stuff that an inverter might not be totally necessary though, might get away with just a beefy adjustable dc-dc converter.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

Lmao... the point isn't even that EVs aren't perfect... the point is, if you factor in the entire cycle, they aren't even clean. In many ways they are worse than Internal Combustion and petroleum.

You're worried about Louisiana and an oil spill?

How bout dying fish over 150 miles down stream from a Lithium process in Nevada?
How bout the region of Chile where 65% of the TOTAL water supply is being used to evaporate Lithium? Causing problems with livestock and killing crops.
How bout Tibet, where hydrochloric acid is left in the ground as a byproduct of Lithium evap?

It's funny how proponents of EVs always think they have the moral high ground... yet they don't even have a foggiest clue how the raw materials for Evs are obtained. It isn't magic.

It’s funny when people read an off the cuff remark that’s dripping with sarcasm and go on a rant.

    Nothing is perfect. No shit.

Well They don't realize I agree with that the mining for EV batts. needs to change and IS evolving to use non mineral based batteries. Motors are being developed to not need rare earth magnets. But crude refining will remain the same long after EV batts are devoid of essential earth minerals. Ev batts aren't perfect, no way, but they are getting better, unlike gasoline which will always be dirty.

Rant? No one is ranting about anything. You're comment was neither off the cuff nor was it steeped in sarcasm. You just didn't realize there was a completely accurate and valid retort to you comment.

The funny thing is, the environmental impacts being brought are felt, now, when EVs make up only 2.2% of automobiles on the road. What happens in 2035 when just Chevy alone will nearly double that number? (Chevy accounts for approx 3.9% of new automobiles)(Chevy is set to be 100% EV in 2035)

What happens to the regions where Lithium extraction depletes the local water supplies, contaminates the streams, leaves acid on the ground, (what do you suppose happens when the wind blows over that hydrochloric acid left on the ground, btw?) etc, etc at 3x the rate it does today? And what about those big assed holes in the ground? And what about the batteries, that will undoubtedly be beginning to go bad right about then?

I'm not ranting. I'm asking legitimate questions. Would you like to toss out another off the cuff remark that's steeped in sarcasm?

If I’m not allowed to declare my own comment sarcastic, then you’re not allowed to say you’re not ranting.

LMAO... today's oil drilling has been cleaner than anything associated with Lithium or Cobalt for over 60 years.

And internal combustion engines have only gotten cleaner and more efficient, year over year, since the day they were invented.

Another just because big trucks are cool.

I was looking into the EV thing and working in the power industry for the last 14 years has taught me a thing or two about behind the curtain. I'm less wasteful by driving my ICE trucks and cars for as long as I can keep them from rotting (rust belt shit) than by replacing one with an EV. The tech isn't there yet and the sources of materials are no better than for ICE cars. I stick to recycling and reducing waste in my daily life and have no guilt filling up my tank with liquified dinosaurs.

I like the reduce and supplement approach myself. Like hybrids do. Reduce the burn of long lost sea shells and use smaller batteries to help make more efficient. Like a coal fired power plant I worked at a few times in KY, they have a large solar farm on the plant grounds. Their combined output makes them the cleanest coal plant in North America. They have the latest tech in scrubbers and use the power generated from the solar panels to supplement the output of the torched magic rocks to drop the emissions of the plant overall. Its like a hybrid power plant.

Selfish or not, for better or worse, we do what we want and think is best. People in general as a species do dumb and messed up stuff all the time for self or population benefit. It never gets handled well enough that nobody is offended/triggered. What makes you feel better at night when your head touches the pillow: Oil spill in the Gulf or acid runoff in Tibet?

I like when they EV swap old cars and trucks. If you can do it feasibly it'd be a cool way to keep your truck around.

Now Hydrogen conversions would be awesome...just no inexpensive way to produce the hydrogen. Dunno the torque either so putting it in a truck may not be doable anyway. Seems only sedans are getting FCV drivetrain.

If it’s a fuel cell and an electric motor the the torque should be fantastic. I think this is an option being considered for rail locomotives.

if it’s just burning h2, that’s a whole other ball of wax

A few additions to make me feel cool.
Until you can recharge as fast as you can fill a tank. I feel an EV is pointless.

I like how they ignored everything you wrote. They don't have the intelligence for a real counter-argument.

It's coming. I think the record holder is a Nissan Leaf Plus 100 miles charge in 10 min.
