A few additions to make me feel cool.
I was alluding to the infrastructure bill and the faith you seem to have in this administration and our current society. I meant no offense.

I'm not offended. I have faith in America and Americans. I could care less about your political beliefs. I was talking about charging infrastructure help. Nothing wrong with that.

Good question, not sure but definitely heavier. Depends on the amount and type of batteries. Motors vary in weight also. But the Rivian pickup weighs 6,300 to 7,300 pounds.

Not something I’d choose to laugh about.
It does point out the need for having diversified energy solutions rather than just one kind of deposit that everyone wants.

It also depends on the type of motor setup. A conversion with a couple motors for each driveshaft or one for each wheel. The Tesla battery alone is over 1000lbs. The torque is there so another 1000lbs shouldn't be a problem. Some mall crawlers here are at that weight and then some with a 3rz or 5vz.

Haven't seen any dual motor setups in my travels on conversion sites. Ususlly they are single motor. I'm sure maybe someone did a dual motor setup but it's just not feasible for a DIY conversion.

I was thinking for a typical 4wd setup. I'm sure there is little to no setups for it now.

Interesting because I was looking that up how it works and since the torque is instant you need a transfer case to handle the torque. The stock transfer case may not be able to handle it. There's a guy who is converting a Hummer and had a transfer case made to handle the torque and a torque box which connects from the motor to the transfer case which also multiplies the torque and acts as a transmission so you won't need to use a manual gearbox. You'd have to also get stronger driveshafts since the setup will twist the stock driveshafts. Basically it turn a Tacoma into beast.

    Transfer case

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

You may not think it's funny... I think it's hilarious. Actions have consequences.

How does that point out a "need" for "diversified energy solutions"? Putting more eggs in the Lithium basket only makes us MORE reliant on China. Although they are not the top producing Country in Lithium (currently) they control the vast majority of the world's supply. They are the #3 Country, but they were just basically given, potentially, the future number 1 producer (Afghanistan) and they hold controlling interest in many of the mines in the rest of the Lithium producing Countries across the globe.

I find it fascinating that (not you specifically) many of the same people that claim oil is bad because we (falsely) "Fight all these wars over it" decide we should "diversify" to a different energy source (not controlled by us) right at the same point in history that we become the world's number 1 producer of the resource we're supposedly fighting wars, every where else, to obtain. (We became the world's number 1 producer of oil in 2017).

    https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=709&t=6

The notion that ANY war has ever been fought, by the U.S., predominantly over oil, is patently false.

In 2020, there were 286.9 million cars in the US.
As of 2020, there are over a million EVs (Electric Vehicles) on the US road.

Edison Electric Institute projected that EV stock will reach 18.7 million by 2030 (Edison Electric Institute, 2018).
The growth of number of vehicles in USA for the last 10 years is steady about 4.5 million cars per year. If the pace stays on in 2030 USA will have 335 million vehicles on the road.

    To put it into percentage:
in 2020 0.3% of cars in USA were EV. In 10 years the number will grow to 5.5%. I think we are good, IC engine is not going anywhere soon. We have 100 years or more to go. If we start building nuclear powerplants now we should be able to keep up with the EV demand too.

Now because @stevesnj is so anal about the tips, my tip is just don't do it. Leave Tacoma the way it is. If you really must to make EV it will be cheaper, easier and better for the environment to get some corolla and make run on batteries. Battery powered truck is the same useless as battery powered space shuttle. You want to haul stuff using electrical energy, you will be better with building a conveyer belt.

You are just pissing in the wind arguing over the inevitable. We are just interested in utilizing all the options that will become available. Start your own EV is bad thread if you need to vent.

Yeh they are pricey for sure. I see low production numbers since it's out of the reach of the average American and Mercedes EQS may be cheaper and have lots more luxury features backed by the Mercedes name.

I would be happy with 1/2 of that lvl of HP and that range. I would LOVE to convert my 2010 to electric. Got solar panels on my roof that reduced my monthly bill fm ~ $200 to $15. Hell, during the summer my electric bill was sub-$3 for 4 months!

Impressive numbers but until they have something on the market with REAL numbers they are another NIKOLA as far as I'm concerned. The failed company NIKOLA not to be confused with Tesla.

I would like to see this thread go on its original direction

Installing an EV unit is much the same as pulling a 4 banger and replacing it with a V8.
It's all about the tech and how it can be done.
    Just my opinion.

What’s wrong with building a better mousetrap, right? Innovation is rewarded, and regardless of anyone’s stuck in the same by place forever philosophy, change is inevitable and necessary.

The combustion engine is about 150 years old, the airplane about 120, the television less than 100. When I was born in 1976 we still ran leaded gas, used rotary dial wall mounted telephones and now we all carry the equivalent of supercomputer in our pockets.

People born now are born into technology and they look at it like I look at water off the tap, that it’s just there, so when presented with the most challenging issues of modern man, I don’t think they’re going to buy into, “Yeah man, you’ll never kill oil.”

    https://www.iaea.org/newscenter/new...iched-uranium-to-fuel-their-research-reactors

Right now there is money being poured into low-enriched uranium reactors that are less dangerous, use less uranium fuel and are more efficient.

I claim in no way to be knowledgeable about this, but I find it fascinating. As far as I understand the potential would be eventually there could be half a dozen of these per town, like electric substations, with consistent, safe power.

As for charging infrastructure, what makes everyone think it’s going to be like a gas station setup?

As baffled as I am by new technology because I’m a guy who pounded nails for the last 25 years, there is a cordless charger dock in my 2020 Ford Transit. This isn’t necessarily a new tech, but with the rapid advancement of our technology, especially based on the comparative advancements of the last 200 years, I don’t see limitations, only room for growth.

And I’m sorry, but the people crying foul that the combustion engine isn’t going anywhere in their lifetime probably sound a hell of a lot like the guy a century or so ago who said, “I’ll never give up my horse and buggy.”

Signing up. I was looking for information on Hybrid conversion. Something out of a AWD Highlander perhaps into a Tacoma. Never considered EV for Tacoma. Sounds Awesome!
