Not the case - sort of. One of my long time service providers is a hardwood specialist (and expert witness regarding flooring issues) and he said the only issue is to ensure that the manufacturer will warranty that type of application. We just installed hardwood and travertine throughout and the prior owner had wood (parquet) since the place was built.

I wish I would have known that about 4 years ago.
But back to the bathrooms, here are a few things that I like and dislike about the way we did it.
    1. I would not use granite counters (especially a dark colored granite) in the bathroom again. It shows EVERYTHING, dust. hairspray, waterspots etc.
    2. I would not use slate in the floor of the shower, it flakes off like crazy. It looks awesome but I wonder what it will look like in 5 years.
    3. I don't know if I would spend the money on a whirlpool tub again or not. My wife loves it but I don't think we use it enough to justify the cost.
    4. I definitely love not having a shower door. It's a walk in shower (kind of shaped like a conch shell) with a warming lamp in the ceiling right as you step out. It stays surprisingly warm in the shower even with the water off.
    5. Most surely would do the radiant heat floor again no matter what.
    6. Really like having the toilet in it's own little room with a door.
I'm sure I'll think of something else in the morning when I'm back in there.:D

one nice thing about dark granite - as a rule of thumb, the darker the less it will stain and you rely less on sealer

    2. I would not use slate in the floor of the shower, it flakes off like crazy. It looks awesome but I wonder what it will look like in 5 years.

Some slate cleaves less than others (once again darker seems to cleave less)

    3. I don't know if I would spend the money on a whirlpool tub again or not. My wife loves it but I don't think we use it enough to justify the cost.

Very good point and increased hassle, need to keep using it and flush to ensure funk doesn't build up in system

    4. I definitely love not having a shower door. It's a walk in shower (kind of shaped like a conch shell) with a warming lamp in the ceiling right as you step out. It stays surprisingly warm in the shower even with the water off.

    Nice!

    5. Most surely would do the radiant heat floor again no matter what.

    Agree, agree, agree!

    6. Really like having the toilet in it's own little room with a door.
I'm sure I'll think of something else in the morning when I'm back in there.:D

One other point is I think spending a little more on a fan is a plus too and if you are real picky and don't mind wasting money, roof top fans are nice and quiet!!!

floor heating is the way to go period..

off subject but a guy i used to run tow trucks for had his whole shop floor heated... was sooooooo nice to lay down on it to work on the trucks and be nice and cozy.... :D plus the floor never stayed wet.. you could wash a truck in there and the concrete would be dry in like 5-10 mins.

Yeah, we heated our garage that way, it's nice to get into a warm car on those cold winter mornings.

This depends on the tile. I have travertine on my bathroom floor, and used the same tiles cut into quarters for my shower. Travertine is not a polished tile, and slippage is not a problem. Now the marble that I used on my walls would have been another story if I had used it on the floor.

And you can change it's surface by blasting, sanding, etc.

My master bathroom is why I have no money to mod my Tacoma:(...but at least I have a killer bathroom:D

My hubby and I completely remodeled our master bathroom, and just recently finished it (almost, still some trim here and there to do). Here's a link to my photos and write-up about the project (too much to post on here) http://pualilia.smugmug.com/Pualili...r-Bath-Remodel/11622234_Zdr8H#819395028_eRKh4

A couple responses to the other responses:)....

-I bought "frameless" shower glass doors from Lowes for about $250 and I love them. Really easy to install, let's lots of light in, and they look great. They aren't really frameless, there is a big frame that attaches to the walls and tub, but the two glass doors themselves are frameless and essentially hang in place.
-Travertine is very nice, but expensive. I originally wanted travertine for my bathroom, but I ended up going with rialto beige porcelain tiles from lowes that were 1/3 the cost of travertine, very low maintenance and tough. They look like natural stone and have texture to them and if they get chipped (which is very unlikely) they show the color of the tile underneath, not red/orange like ceramic).
-you can seal your tile and grout with sealer (very easy and inexpensive to do) once a year, and it keeps your tile and grout looking great. The water will just bead up instead of soaking in.

ok, good for now, good luck!

Wow! That's awesome! You got a lot going on in there!! Tons of different stuff just about everywhere. How the heck did you plan all that out? And the bamboo on the walls is neat.

The doors on the shower have a rail mount at the top? Is that an 'L' channel at the bottom? I was looking at something similar at a showroom today. It appears that L channel catches the water (so to speak). That's one of the main things I was wondering about. I'm still open to all sorts of things but we might end up going with a shower curtain. Not sure. I wonder if they make tinted glass for those doors?

I'm not sure I like the idea of needing to treat tiles once a year. It's probably very easy to to.... however ....knowing my schedule and routine, it'd never get done and I'd be kicking myself wishing I'd pursued something with less maintenance. (reality check)

I'm still researching and learning. My head is in a fog -but I'm really excited to get the ball rolling!! I definately like the 'stone' look.

It's funny...but when it comes to deciding colors/styles for our house remodeling, my husband and I argue like you wouldn't believe. The one person who's the least design savvy and never gets involved with any other decorating.....always has an input when you least want it. And he'll fight and argue his case (his designs) until I absolutely give up. HERE!! It's YOUR BABY Now!!! God, I'm not looking forward to that....

Nice!! Is that carpet on the wall? Or a cat scratcher? ;)
Man, I wish I had a larger bathroom for neat stuff like that. I'm stuck with the tub/shower combo and no room to expand. Oh well.....gotta get crackin and do some research and make due with what I've got.

I guess I should take pictures of the old shit, but I'm almost embarrassed to show it!! (laugh)

I'll bless you with some bathroom shots. Ignore the dirt....
This shot is looking in from the hallway. Behind the door (left) is the tub/shower combination. Across from the toilet, is a vanity. Across from the door is a small hallway where my husband's vanity is and walk-in closet.

Not much to work with in terms of redesign. If anyone has ideas....as I know nothing about what's NEW and modern.

I wax my back. You have to when your as hairy as me.

Still lots of room Janster! Only reason my parents have that much room is because we knocked down walls. There is another bedroom right next to their room. So w knocked that wall down. They turned the whole thing into a huge closet. Then we knocke the bathroom wall down and added about 3 feet to the bathroom. A lot of work but well worth it.

I want to remodel my bathroom as well. My house is only four yrs old but we never use the large tub. I have a large tub and next to it is a glass shower. My goal is to remove both shower and tub and make a large walk-in shower w/ bench. Natural light will shine through the glass blocks that is currently installed above the tub.

But, being military I don't know how long I will be at this location so I'm not sure if it's worth the money.

Janster, if you're are redoing the floor w/ tile or whatever, invest in floor heating. It is amazing to get out of the shower and step onto a warm floor.

Procrastinatin at its best... and actually, haven't been able to schedule an appointment with our installer (cousin) with either of our schedules.

Considering a jacuzzi style tub now....

I know there are the water jets & there's air bubbles or both.

With the air...I've been told the air is heated? Is that right?

With the water jets - do they have to be rinsed out everytime you use them? How do you do that? Do you plug a hose to it or...?

I've also heard about concerns with hot water heater capacity...
We just installed a 55 gallon hot water heater last year. It's only the two of us at the house. Do you think 55 gallon would be enough to warrant getting a jacuzzi? (standard 30"x59" tub size)

What would you guys recommend? Obviously, price and our options are a factor here (which, I have no idea yet). Water jets, air bubbles, or both?

Trying to make an appointment with our local Hajoca dealer and once again, scheduling conflicts. They're Saturday appointments are booked to the end of MAY. I really don't want to wait that long to make some decisions or this bathroom will never get done!
