Tow cable, as in slow steady pulls with no shock/static pull... sure

Recovery strap, as in shock load/dynamic pull, absolutely not.

I'd say you'd still be better off with a chain or a strap depending on which you're going for, and no cable at all.

A good link on vehicle recovery

    http://www.gmfullsize.com/forum/showthread.php?t=75056

A lot of good information, some is more towards actual rigging but it all is still good info, albeit a bit dry at times

Here is what can happen the minute you disregard safety
Women's arm torn off in tow mishap

A tip to make using a shackle easier. Tighten all the way, and then turn back 1/4 - 1/2 of a turn. This will keep the shackle pin from tightening on you, requiring a tool to remove. Never use a shackle to join straps in a dynamic pull.

yes only as a tow cable not anything with shock or jerks. but just something that i can put some pressure on to do a steady pull. in little cases where you are near a solid service. but thanks for the advice. but i have thought about breaking and all that stuff with shock value. good looking out though

Myself and two buddies were out in a Jeep a few springs ago. Got stuck in a snow field with nothing to winch to in any direction! Started trying to dig ourselves out and found that we were in at least 10 feet of snow!! We found a 2 foot boulder, dug a nice deep hole for it, tied an old tow strap around it and buried it. Instant anchor! and rolling back on 20 minutes later.

Chainsaw... hell yes. I know some guys locally who carry them. One said he cut down a tree, turned it into planks and used the boards to extract his truck.

Wow, that is some recovery gear! Just a thought/tip, put your hood up on your truck while winching. I see the strap laying over the cable in case it ever broke, but if it kept coming at your truck, the hood will take the cable instead of the windshield.

Yes good idea! I now only have synthetic rope on my winch's for more safety.
