Gotcha. Yea that rub isn't too bad at all.

I'm sure you'll discovery any trimming that needs to be done when you take it offroad and stretch its legs.

Thanks for checking. Sounds like I shouldn't have too many issues with the 16x8's with 4" BS I have coming next week :fingerscrossed:

I definitely will. I'll throw it up in a few of the threads and my build page.
Got the rubber all ready to go

Digging up a dated threat I know. It seems to be the most recent on the subject but somebody kick me to a more recent one if it's out there.

I'm really liking the 33's on the 1st gen. I'm considering it myself as my current tires are worn and I have a nice set of 285/70 R17 on TR beadlocks that I took off my FJ62 that are just taking up space in my garage. I wish I hadn't taken them off but that's another story,,,,

My '03 tacoma is currently sitting stock on 31". I didn't see any talk of folks with 33's on 17in wheels, but I did find this video of a Prerunner with 17in wheels (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKq98ItnCy0) Not sure what backspacing/offset they are running but I like the look of how it sits.

Anybody else running 17"wheels with 33s"? If so, what lift/suspension do you have or would recommend? I would like to keep it as low as possible but functional as well.

I have 285/70/R17 with only Bilstein 5100s and they only rub the frame if cranked alllll the way. You’ll have to do a pinch weld mod but that’s not hard. They actually didn’t rub at all for the longest time until I replaced my LCAs recently so now they barely do when cranked for some reason.
Planning on getting the full OME setup this summer though, hoping that helps since my coilovers/leaf springs have 265k on them.

Just because someon asked.. 285-70-17's. Icon's and j59's in the back.. About 2 inches over stock maybe less.I have a lot of backspacing. I only rub the front of the rear fender when the tires droop.

@Logans2001, Thanks! Looks sharp. What kind of backspacing & offset do you have? Also, do you carry a spare?

@chrslefty, Thanks... I just took a glance at your build--I'm going to enjoy going through that later. Well done on your setup, looks great too IMO.
What's a lot of backspacing?(maybe I'll find that in your build post..) The wheels I'm thinking about trying to make work have a Backspacing of: 4.5" and Offset: 4.5mm (negative).

There 17x9 with 3.5 or -25 backspacing . Which I guess isn't a lot by some standards. They sure were a pain to make fit. Lol

285's on an 8" wide wheel with 4" of BS, -12mm offset. I have King COs set at ~2.5" of lift in the front. A typical mid-travel setup.

Slight rub on the passenger side frame rail at full turn.

It is important to point out that adding lift alone will not eliminate tire rub. With a 285 wide tire, a stock BS wheel will rub on the UCA. But moving the wheel outboard will change where the wheel arc is. A significant amount of 'massaging' will have to be done to the pinch weld on the back side of the front wheel wells regardless of how much lift you add.

Thanks for the info... I'm thinking about putting these wheels/tires (link) on my 1st Gen and just trying to understand what it'll take. I'm looking at this for a few reasons; mainly because I haven't been able to sell them for a reasonable price but also because I'm in need of new tires. Having a bit more off-road capability is a plus as well.

Sounds like some coilovers and rear lift would be required. I'm sure my '03 stock suspension is in need of some attention by now anyways so it's not like I would be replacing anything new.
