Thinking of putting the Rough Country 2" leveling front shocks in my truck and new shocks in the rear....do I need to install a diff drop also?

The 1st Gen: All pro 3” lift (650 lbs coils, expedition rears with bilstiens),Timbren rear bumpstops, ubolt flip, diff drop, carrier bearing drop, 33’s on beadlocks ,ARB Bumper, winch, hand throttle, ARE canopy, roof bars, poly bushings all around minus the body mounts. The 2nd Gen: Leveling kit, roll up tonneau cover. 265/75/16’s
I know it’s not what you were asking, but I have a spacer and add a leaf kit for sale. Includes diff and skid drops. No rear shocks, but it Might be a cheaper way to accomplish what you’re after.

    $50

    Edit: $50 + shipping

Diff drop doesn't really help much. It's more complicated than that, to be honest. 50/50 chance it is "plug and play".

It may drive like sh!t (my situation) with vibrations (my needle bearing), steering column, now I have creaks in places.

But, your truck may drive great after it and an alignment.

Go step by step, but it can really turn into a rabbit hole man and a straight money pit if you aren't prepared for it.

    This^^^^
The reason I took off the lift I had was the truck drove like garbage. It wandered all over the place because it didn’t have enough caster. Two hands on the wheel all the time. Wasn’t willing to spend the money to do it right and wasn’t partial to the lift since it’s a daily driver and I already have a lifted 1st gen to raid my wallet.

Can installing these with new rear shocks really be that much if a problem?

Rough country isn't exactly known to be the best brand and when you can buy OME 884 coils (or Headstrong 2 inch) paired with bilstein 5100s for about the same price as those and have a MUCH better product it just doesnt make sense.

This is essentially what I did with my truck. Got Bilstein 5100s with a 2"HS coil. You can buy this exact front setup for ~370 from Headstrong offroad. Another ~300 and you can get 5100s for the rear with an AAL.

Also wouldn't recommend a diff drop. Many people on this site have lifted their trucks without it.

Add A Leaf. its just what it sounds like, you add a Leaf to the rear Leaf Springs, and it gives about 1-1.5" of lift in the rear, along with a couple hundred extra pounds of payload capacity. Much better way to lift the rear slightly than blocks, which are worthless, and are often a downgrade.

AAL = Add-a-leaf. It's an extra leaf (or set of leafs) that you add to your stock leaf springs. They will lift the rear of the vehicle and slightly increase load carrying capacity

if you want to just "level" your truck ide just do spacers or 5100s with the oem coils on the 2nd or 3rd notch and leave the rear alone.

Lol....I figured out the "AAL" after I posted it. I guess all I want is to lift the front a little as I am running 265/75R16 tires and I'd like to have a little more clearance in the front without making it look stupid

You're best bet it just get a set of 5100s and set them on the 1st or 2nd setting providing .85 or 1.5 inch lift.

pretty much this. I would also get the 5100s for the rear as well, just to upgrade the ride a little bit, since its not all that expensive to just get all four, and they're stupid easy to install yourself.

Also this may not be needed but depending how many miles are on your current shocks, the top bolt may have wallowed out the bushing in the top hat, when you disassemble the front coil to replace the shocks, it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the top hats, they can be had at autozone or oreillys for 25 bucks each. You may be fine to keep yours but for a small additional cost, it's a nice little upgrade so you wont have to worry about it in the future. I replaced mine when I put my lift on
