Thank you. It is my first vacuum veneer project. The black limba is veneered baltic birch, matched fliches on both sides. Curly maple from Ohio, and cherry miter splines. It looks better in person.

how do you make something like that? like, specifically, the checkerboard pattern? do you have cut up a bunch of cubes and glue them together or what?

If I remember from junior high wood shop, you glue a bunch of different shade wood strips together, let the glue dry, plane the wood, cut wood in opposite direction of strips, glue the strips together, plane the wood.

 

I made a large number of book matched cutting boards for Christmas money. (Sold 900 dollars worth in one day) I made every strip the exact same width and thickness.
I kept them in order as it went across the boards, and make them to long on purpose. I ended up with enough cutoffs to make three end grain cutting boards.
